Independent Rolex servicing/restoration

After receiving an unbelievable proposal to restore my wife's vintage Rolex, I wanted to find out if anyone knows of a independent watchmaker who could do this in the Zug/Zurich/Luzern area.

Thanks. I know them, but didn't realise that they do their own servicing. Will check it out

Give this Little shop a call (in Horgen). http://www.gässli-zyt.ch/index.html

He has certificates for several of the big brands (not sure if Rolex is one though) as he used to work in big shops.

Might be worth a shot.

Re: Independent Rolex servicing/restoration

A quick update. When I went to collect the watch, the gentleman in the service department, who was incredibly nice and professional, actually recommended an independent watchmaker and even printed out their details.
Long story short, their proposal was less than half the cost of the other one, they opened up on their day off to take the watch and so far have been great. 7 more weeks to go. I will post an update with some pictures when we get the watch back.

7 weeks ? For some cogs and gears and a spring ? I can get my Shovelhead rebuild in less time than that...

All in CHF 1,500. It's not a service, however, but more an overhaul/restoration. The other quote we received was CHF 3,400, excluding polishing!

Actually 8 weeks (It went in a week ago). Unlike the Shovelhead, it requires more than just a hammer to rebuild.

Re: Independent Rolex servicing/restoration

OK, a bit of a delay in sourcing some parts, but the watch is now done and I must say that I am really impressed with the result. The watch was never going to look like a new watch (It's 1939), but before it was really dull and mechanically not very sound.

My wife agonised over the choice of strap, but I really love it! Previously she had always had croc or lizard straps, but this is my favourite by far!

No worries, it’s always useful info. I saw a beautiful Submariner Single Red, so I may want to get one to restore. Such a cool watch!

Re: Independent Rolex servicing/restoration

Metal looks great but restored dial probably decreased the value of the watch.

Dial has not been restored nor replaced. It was in super condition before, so a clear lens really helps it pop.

He is truly the best- and probably cheaper than anything in Switzerland, and a Rolex specialist too.
