Laptop with COM port (looking to borrow)

I need to borrow an old laptop with a serial port on it, preferably with 20-30 min battery life. I need it for 2-3 days for equipment testing, I forgot mine at home ... and USB to COM adapters do not the job ..
Reward in beers! :-)

Thanks!

(I live in Zurich )

Re: Laptop with COM port (looking to borrow)

Buy a COM to USB cable. Will cost you about 30chf. I have a dual port to USB cable which was a bit more.

Think Conrad have them or Distrelic. Check toppriese.

I have used mine on numerous occasions, inlucing with 'Windmill' software and to control devices.

Re: Laptop with COM port (looking to borrow)

I have tried three different USB-COM adapters - it simply does not do the job for my particular application, which involves sequences of connect/disconnect to a number of modules (issues with baud rate sync). A PCMCIA to COM adaptor will probably do it, but I already spent to much time and money on adapters, and these are hard to source.

Re: Laptop with COM port (looking to borrow)

I recently got rid of 2 old latptops that would have been suitable.

I have another one sitting on a pile of electronics for recycling. If I can find the power adaptor I can boot it up and see if it still runs. Not sure if the battery will be very good though. It's a very old Compaq.

But hopefully someone here will have something a bit better.

The PCMCIA cards are not so cheap, but won't break the bank either:

Re: Laptop with COM port (looking to borrow)

That's true - I am having my dedicated laptop shipped in two weeks. Adding up what I have already spent on USB adaptors, would be too much :-)
