This is exactly why their experiment in Democracy is failing.

It's not only counter to the norms set by Mitch McConnell only 4 years ago.

It's unfair to all the other constituents when one party acts so insidiously towards the other side.

Essentially, it only raises the stakes to punish each other.

A zero sum game is at play, and everyone will come out a loser.

Quite nihilistic....almost as if it plays into the hands of one man....Putin.

The American govt - "the worst that money can buy."

I thought a zero sum game is one where what the winners gain is balanced exactly by what the losers lose. Worst case, everyone gains nothing and wins nothing.

Zero-sum turns into lose-lose very quickly (or at least into a very small number of winners)
The idea of social-democracy is that you raise the bar to a win-win, with the balance tilted in favour of the election winners.
The polarisation that is happening at the moment is threatening this concept, which is why it is so dangerous

Maybe there should be an "obituary" sub forum, then it would be clear.

Re: Rip rgb

'Remembering Ruth Bader Ginsburg', a tribute/retrospective from the NYT:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRlEFT-44Ik

Well worth watching.

RBG's driving passion was equality. Although often thought of as an icon of women's fight for equality, I hadn't realised that one of her landmark cases was brought in support of men's rights. At the time, only a widow could receive SSI; RBG brought a case that expanded the same support to widowers. Classic RBG - her fight for equality meant just that, equal.

The video also highlights the wonderful relationship between RBG and Anton Scalia. Polar opposites ideologically, but nonetheless they became dear friends who truly respected each other's intellect and legal scholarship.

A timely reminder - and example - in these toxically partisan days.

As above, RBG's death is a great loss to us all.

Hey you guys, canít you keep your politics out of this thread? You got lots of other places, or you could start another.

Please delete your posts.
I agree we have enough threads about politics here and they all cross over each other and back. Let's try to leave this thread for talk about RBG's life and legacy.

If you want to talk about politics and how her passing is going to turn into a whale of a political fight, please take those posts/discussions over to the Trump thread or Trump v. Biden thread.

Not really, as I've never heard of 'rgb' used to refer to a person.

How can you talk about a political person without talking about politics?

Supreme Court justices are not political persons. It's the media that assigns political monikers like conservative and liberal to describe them, based on how they vote on various issues. Even then, they're not always predictable.

In fact, the two most recent appointees have shown with their votes that being appointed by a particular president doesn't always mean a justice will vote the way that president's party would like.

I know you've been out of the States for a while and probably don't follow the happenings there much, but Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been referred to as RBG by the media, and by fans as "Notorious RBG" for a long, long time. She has quite a fan following that other justices don't seem to have.

I think Ginsburg was a fascinating person.

You’ve never heard the the Notorious RBG? She was a powerhouse to be reckoned with.

Edit: oh I see this thread was a victim of autocorrect. You never miss an opportunity to be needlessly pedantic, Tom.

Supreme Court judge is the most political job there is besides being an elected politician. Anyone who takes the job knows that and itís not an American thing - Pretty much all western nations have a similar set up: whenever the parties really canít agree on something, so pretty much all the time, do they send it to the Supreme Court to decide.
