As we don't have a car and it is quite cumbersome to carry a big box of firewood home regularly, does anyone know of a home delivery service? (Bern city center)

Your local farmer might als be helpful and deliver to your door.

Make sure you are clear on the length of wood you need. It is pre-cut to 1 metre length for drying then cut for the final customer. Common is 33cm. Sometimes 30cm. It is often more expensive for the 25cm size.

Depending on the size of your fireplace / Swedish fireplace anything larger than 25cm will not fit.

Hardwood is more expensive than mixed hard/softer wood. Same for CH sourced vs. EU sourced.

Delivery will normally be in the driveway so you will need to do the stacking etc. yourself. Delivery is a value added service so it will cost more than buying a stère at Hornbach or Coop brico etc.

If you buy in bulk the measurement is typically a "ster" which is one cubic metre. It's measured overall assuming the wood is well packed, not 1m3 of actual wood).

That's about 420kg of wood, or the equivalent of 28 15kg boxes.

Not directed particularly at the OP but burning a wood stove in a city centre is incredibly bad for that city's air pollution.

I guess the only way to do this without avoiding it all together is to make it a special occasion or weekend event thing rather than every night and to ensure the wood is properly seasoned (dry).

It is definitely a weekend / special occasion thing since I have asthma...but since there are many fireplaces here in the Old Town, I'm sure the air isn't the best in the Winter.

When I first came to Switzerland, our neighbour had a friend who owned a bit of the forest. He'd bring her a couple of cubic metres of wood cut to 0.3-0,5m length each winter, so we got into the deal. This wasn't in the city, but it wasn't out in the boondocks either.

Maybe your neighbours can recommend a place to get it at source. It's got to be cheaper.
