Of course, if you are doing the cake smash thing, you probably has a 'gender reveal' party and cake too:

Wow, why would anyone do this? Completely bizarre and seems like it's just for the benefit of the parents, social media and appearances than anything else.
Most kids smash their first birthday cake. It's just more popular now to stage it with a pro and post all over social media. I wouldn't do it but if parents want to, more power to them.

My parents have some great pictures of my siblings and I on our first birthdays, but pictures weren't really staged back in the day. With those old-school film cameras, you had one or two shots to get the best moment, and might have to advance the film between shots.

Have you never watched children have their first experience with various foods? It can be hilarious.

There is a whole sequence for these photo ops:

Age Year 1: Cake smash
Age Year 2: Concrete block smash
Age Year 3: Assault with a blunt instrument
Age Year 4: Child removed from home by Social Services

I did a quick google and came to exactly the same conclusions - I really think these sorts of "celebrations", like gender-reveal parties, engagement set-ups and indeed pregnancy pictures, are more born from social media desires and expectations than anything else.

"Look at us!"
"Aren't we brilliant for having a baby"
"See how much money we're prepared to waste for a few instagram points".
etc.
Uhm, I don't know, Ace. The first birthday is a milestone or a rite of passage in many cultures across the globe and is celebrated since....well, since nobody can remember. It may look silly to some, to have a party, with a cake or other expensive goodies and gifts, but it's definitely not something new.

Now, I can understand why wasting a perfectly nice cake (not the one Tom1234 has posted here) might seem frivolous to some, but the idea behind it, that is not something new, and certainly not invented since Instagram or FB.

I still can't help thinking that 800 invested in a decent fund to give you 4000 at age sixteen is a better present than some funny photos.
Very practical, very down to earth, something that our grandparents or parents would have done/would do. Newer generations of parents invest more - time and money, in things that might not have a material value but they certainly have a sentimental one. After all, I do remember more fondly about the time I spent with my grandfather, the fun things we did, than the (relatively modest) saving cheque he left to each of his nephews and nieces.

That being said, a cake smash party is not something we did (different traditions), but if the parents want this, more power to them.

Fully agree with the sentiment - but a one year old won't remember it, so it still feels more like a gimmick than a real family thing.

Later on their fifth birthday party with ten friends will probably end up in much the same result as far as the cake is concerned, by then the 800 would have become enough for a trip to Eurodisney with the grandparents

how shit is that?

Rather than do it for a first birthday, I could consider doing it for the round birthday my wife has coming up.

She would appreciate getting all made up, wearing nice clothes and having her face shoved into a sticky cake

It is? I have heard of such First Birthday celebrations, as something particularly special, only in cultures where infant mortality was very high, and it was worth celebrating Baby's having pulled through against dire odds for a whole year, or else in groups believing that this has a certain religious or spiritual significance.

And now this. The idea, though, of dressing up Baby to make him/her pose in front of the camera, and then to have its head smashed into a cake? No, for me this notion is entirely new. Having never heard of such a thing, I went a-googling, and learnt that many Americans do it, and have done so for a generation or two!

I found the whole matter off-putting. Not so much the "waste of the cake" (that, too) but the excessiveness of the whole performance. I saw too many videos in which the babies were enticed or forced to participate in the script. And some with make-up and in clothes that could hardly be seen as age-appropriate, and I found those images distasteful. Scary that people would post their children, like that, out on the net, without realising that that could be harmful for the child.

I suppose there may be more baby-friendly ways to do it than those many examples I saw.

I agree with those who've said that the money could probably be better spent on something that is actually good for the child, and/or fun and will make the child happy for a long time, when it is old enough to remember the event.

One comment seemed particuluarly poignant. Someone wrote that she had been shown the photos of her own first birthday cake smash many times, and the event remained one of her father's proudest and happiest memories of her childhood.

Oh dear, I think I misunderstood the purpose. I hope I did?

When I was growing up, the "cake smash" was simply when everyone gathered around the table and watched the birthday child discover cake with icing. No one ever shoved the child's face in it!

Judging from the YT vids, it seems to be just letting the baby do its own thing without shoving its head in it! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cake+smash

Yes, but if you've spent all that money, the baby is dressed up in its finery, the photo shoot is set up, the photographer is waiting and yet the baby shows absolutely no interest in the cake - then the pressure is really on and I bet some parents perhaps give a bit of a helping hand....

It's actually a great opportunity to smash the cake in the face of the mother in law. To see the baby's reaction, of course.

It is. Probably it originates from the past, when indeed infant mortality was higher....pretty much everywhere, but I don't think it is still/only related to that. In Korea for instance it's a big deal, you can read about Doljanchi (1st Birthday Party). And who doesn't celebrate their child's first anniversary anyway? I think today is more spiritual or religious than anything else. Of course, there are still cultures where the reasons for celebrating are more...dramatic.

I didn't know about this cake smash party either but probably people find it funny. I take it it's more for the parents or family than for the kido, like many other things. But I agree with your sentiment - posting staged pictures with your kids on Instagram etc is, for me too, rather weird. I won't comment on the custom itself, each to their own.
