I am reaching out to see if any one has a good experience with a photographer that does the 1st birthday cake smash photo shoot.

I have a GA so generally can be anywhere around Switzerland, although preferably in the Zurich region. Can even be over the border (if in the next few months we are allowed to cross).

Main criteria is I am looking not to take out a loan for such a photo shoot! I have seen some prices which are around 500 bucks without the cake, its a bit too steep for us.

Contact her for a quote based on what you want. Maybe you can just pop to her studio in Bern and then you wouldn't need to pay her travel costs to come to you.

My first thought - waste of a good cake. Second thought was WTF, after seeing this on the BBC website: "A cake smash party can cost £800".

Do you think said child will ever remember said event? Other than the pictures being resurrected on their wedding day? That is if the same picture formats are still in use?

Sounds like fun for mum and dad, provided they don’t have to clean up the mess (other than the kid).

I did a quick google and came to exactly the same conclusions - I really think these sorts of "celebrations", like gender-reveal parties, engagement set-ups and indeed pregnancy pictures, are more born from social media desires and expectations than anything else.

"Look at us!"
"Aren't we brilliant for having a baby"
"See how much money we're prepared to waste for a few instagram points".
etc.

I'm sure there are photos of me somewhere with food all over my face in a high chair, but paying a professional to set it up seems a little far. That said, let them at it, aren't parents supposed to get joy from their children?

True - most of what we enjoy in life is pretty pointless from a pure survival point of view, and frequently expensive as well.

I still can't help thinking that £800 invested in a decent fund to give you £4000 at age sixteen is a better present than some funny photos.

Wow, why would anyone do this? Completely bizarre and seems like it's just for the benefit of the parents, social media and appearances than anything else. I can't see how a 1 year old kid would get anything out of doing this.

I always wondered what the point was.

Well to put it the other way, with all the suffering children inflict upon their parents, maybe having them smash their face into a cake so the parent friends can awww over the photos is no harm.

I could take the photos, I have a phone. Cake, baby and clean up not provided. Professional looking? I can stamp them with a big approved stamp.

That was also my reaction. But when I googled it I indeed found some offers in Switzerland (and to be fair they were much less then the 800 Pound mentionned in the BBC article). But yes. Still sounds crazy imho

One year olds because they can't struggle against it?
A one year old does not necessarily see the "fun" in this.

I can see an upside to plunging a one-year old’s little face into a cake. Much like being frightened by a dog while in pram, the child could grow up hating cake and sweet things.

Spending hundreds to buy an expensive cake to then smash it up under the eye of a hired photographer... that's first-world privilege for you.
