Re: Who is really rich?

I consider myself ‘rich’ these days in Switzerland as I am able to pay all the unexpected bills within 3 months, something I struggled with when I used to be ‘poor’....

Re: Who is really rich?

"Rich" can mean many things and not just money. I recently arrived back in the US and asked my 27-year-old daughter if there is anything she would like for Christmas.

Without missing a beat, she responded, "A job!" She was let go 4 months ago. Things are not the best in the US - despite the stock market surge of late. Small businesses are hurting and then some... My town looks like a ghost town and it was bustling before the pandemic.

To me, rich means family and health; money comes and goes but one can never replace family and health

Re: Who is really rich?

Money can't buy happiness... but it certainly ****ing helps. These threads make me laugh as the only people who ever seem to virtue signal and say 'money doesn't matter' and/or wax lyrical about the philosophical and emotional defintion of 'rich', are the people who have enough of it. Ask people who live in poverty and can't afford to properly feed and clothe their family or send their kids for a good education if they are 'happy'. I would take being rich/wealthy over being poor any day of the week.

I was 10 years in Switzerland.

120k seems a lot of money until you start dating

If you date a lot...the usual for zurich 120k is nothing
I think you are confusing "dating" with "prostitution".

My definition of rich: when you can continue with your current lifestyle for 5 years, with no income. I would easy make it 25 years, so am rich enough

120k is EF poverty line. Everyone knows this.

All jokes aside, I moved here for around that and I would not consider myself particularly well off. (Though potentially large bonus will make it slightly better).

Obviously I do not starve, but I have very little social security/safety net until I get swiss passport etc etc. In between then I feel obliged to save a large proportion of this in case job goes away. Also I live a relatively minimalist lifestyle. I do not go out most nights, I don't have a car etc.

Also what is very clear here, is that unless you are married with similar salary..........good luck ever buying a place. This is alien to me.

No it doesn‘t make you rich, I think we all agree on that, but it does give you a comfortable lifestyle. According to this link it is the average household income for 2.2 people. How far that 120k goes will depend upon where you live. If you live in Glarus or Jura it‘s going to go further than central Zurich or Geneva.

The average family (see above for income levels) don‘t own property, so it‘s not unreasonable that you can‘t either, but it certainly isn‘t impossible. You just need to save a deposit and you won‘t be able to live in a prime location.

I‘m not sure how you can say there isn‘t a safety net here either. Plus/minus you get 2 years salary at 70% from your unemployment insurance. I agree after that things get pretty grim, but the state won‘t let you starve.

Re: Who is really rich?

I agree it is comfortable, but that is a very tight parameter (Eg having to live in reasonable at best accommodation (Zurich), not being to frivolous with nights out etc). And then all of that stacks up to having to save a ton if you ever want to get a 20% deposit.

And with the safety net you need to be working for a long time to be able to get it? I am here only half a year hence my concern.

Maybe it is just more stressful at the start because there have been lots of costs involved in getting this far and over time it will become easier.

There will always be more costs at the beginning and you spend more on every day items as you learn where best to shop. It does get easier. You need to have worked for over a year to get access to the unemployment insurance.

FWIW I moved from London to Zurich in 2009 and earned around the same amount. I paid 2,700 for an apartment in Wiedikon. I see that something suitable for a single or couple is still available. I also went out a lot and travelled. Life certainly felt comfortable, but I guess I wasn‘t concerned about losing my job.

I admit it took 8 years before we finally bought a place, but we weren‘t making any special attempts to save to do so. If it had been a bigger priority or we went for something cheaper we could have done it much sooner. Remember though, that buying here isn‘t the norm and isn‘t culturally expected, as it is in the UK.

Re: Who is really rich?

That is fair! I guess I feel a bit more wary as Corona has changed a lot, lots of job security is no longer there. Also I have not had the chance to enjoy the city as "organically" because of the restrictions etc.

Hopefully I will settle in better over time.

Disagree. Unless you already own a house. Otherwise you will be trapped paying rent forever.

Sometimes it's better to pay rent (especially when you only pay a modest amount) than be financially trapped with an expensive house that you bought and had to pay a huge deposit for. It depends on the market and circumstances.

There is something modest priced in Zurich?

I agree for when you are younger, but having no rent cost when you are older can only be a good thing. Also I have owned houses since I was in my twenties so it feels more natural to me.

Just will be a bit harder in Zurich to do!
