For Sky Watchers: Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn 21 Dec 2020

Just a (literal) heads-up for amateur sky watchers:

December 21 is the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, the point where the two planets will be closest to one another. They will be 0.1 degree apart, giving quite a show.

While this conjunction happens every 20 years, the two planets do not come so close every cycle. This is the closest they have come together since 1623!

The conjunction is easily visible in the evening sky, for about an hour after sunset, even now as the planets are moving closer together towards the 21st.

Unfortunately because the conjunction is fairly low in the evening sky, built-up neighborhoods might find the show blocked by neighboring houses.

For those in my area of Ausserschwyz, if you can't see it from your balcony head on up the Etzel.

Re: For Sky Watchers: Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn 21 Dec 2020

We went conjunction hunting up on the Etzel this evening, a dry run for tomorrow.

Unfortunately just as the sun was setting the cloud cover came in, so we couldn't see anything.

We also realized that looking to the southwest sky the Rossberg probably will block the view, given how low above the horizon the conjunction is expected to be.

So for folks out my way, the Etzel might not be the best place. I think we'll try Raten Pass tomorrow night. You need an unobstructed view - something difficult to find here, where there is always a neighboring building or another hill in view.

Fingers crossed that the clouds cooperate.

Considering heading up to Felsenegg, maybe I'll see if the point on the Planet Walk (Planetenweg) for either Saturn or Jupiter is suitable ... the ridge runs roughly north-south, so the only issue might be tall trees.
It'd be pretty cool to get a pic of the setup and then the conjunction from one of them - now I have a goal for my daily walk today! Get up there and check out the locations, and see if there's good road access nearby (I don't really want to carry my telescope on my back for a few kilometres, even though it's not huge - but the forecast for cloud cover is not encouraging, anyway, so I might need to abort the mission).

Looking like cloud and rain here too .. Bummer..

I'll setup the camera on the scope anyway and hope for the best.

mayans predicted the end of the world in 2021. given the corona/2020 situation, it could be the beginning of the end...
