Media / Film / Advertising Industries

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what the media, film and or advertising industry is like in Switzerland?

I would love to hear from someone who works on film sets, video productions, photographic shoots or even the more content development side, including graphic design, or post production (video editing, vfx).

How big is the industry in Switzerland (more specifically Zurich)? Is work scarce? Are there any big companies I should know of? What types of studios are most common? Is the work shared between numerous small studios or do big media companies take majority? How competitive is it? Is it essential to have fluent German?

I am a 23 year old Australian citizen hoping to line something up using the “young professionals (trainees)” agreement. Which is up to a year and a half of full-time work with an employer. How possible do you think this is?

All thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Maxi.

I donīt think CH is a good option, Swiss media production or advertising and design is provincial at best. The words "Swiss and creative" in one sentence is a rare beast even without corona.

Budgets unless you work on global productions are rather poor, the 3 language versions for commercials could be 50% of the budget. Lots of stuff done for free or almost so.

I only ever did 1 feature film for a friend, I never counted my hours however I suspect my pay was about 5 CHF an hour, I was the highest paid person on the set. 4 of the crew worked for Swiss Television & used their entire yearly holiday to work for free, 1 even paid 5000 towards the production costs.

Because they're made to meet the local taste and expectations, which I wouldn't call provincial rather discreet or less flashy. I know what you mean, but it sounds a tad arrogant.

@OP> That being said, a word to the wise. This is no reflection on you personally: you don't have much of a chance to find a job in this field right now. Plus you'll need a work permit and it's gonna be difficult for most companies to justify bringing you here and not hiring someone who's already living here and is unemployed. I don't know if it's "fair" or good for the industry but it is what it is.

Maybe I did use the wrong word, but years of working within the industry have left me a tad jaded. Having said that there are a few gems coming out of CH but they are mainly in packaging and packdesign.
