Wood cutting at OBI / Migros etc

Any of you had wood cut at these stores like Hornbach etc? How does it work, cost per cut, free etc?
Can you just walk in pick up a panel and ask them to cut it up. Before I go and ask..

Mrs H likes to paint on wood and it's pretty expensive to buy, like a 30x30cm piece if 8mm ply wood for 10chf..

Hornbach have 1200x600mm 8mm ply for 14chf. Would they chop it into 8 30x30cm (minus the saw loss) chunks for us?

Quantities are too small for me to go buy a table saw and do it myself.

At Jumbo which is the only place I’ve done it at you take your piece of wood along to the woodcutting desk, give them the size you want and they cut it for you at not cost.
They then give you a piece of paper to take to the checkout with the price of the original piece of wood on it.

Re: Wood cutting at OBI / Migros etc

I only have experience with Coop Bau+Hobby and as far as I can remember the cutting service was free. You don't bring a piece to be cut but you write the type of wood you want on the form and the saw operator pulls a piece from his own stock.

That said, if it's a larger amount you need, it might be cheaper to go directly to a timber merchant if there is one in your area. They will also cut it up for you if you ask nicely. And 30x30 pieces sound more in the category of offcuts to me, so you might even get them super cheap.

I've had it done at online with Migros Do-It.
You can choose the material, lengths, veneers, colors and receive a quote for it all online and it'll be cut and ready for pick-up within a couple days.

Re: Wood cutting at OBI / Migros etc

Yes, those DIY shops mentioned do free cutting, but only to cut your chosen piece to a given size, with straight, flat cuts only. So you can get any shape you like, as long as it's a rectangle.

Hornbach will do more complex cutting, like cutting out work surfaces for sinks and hobs, but they do charge for this and you'll usually have to wait, possibly leaving it with them for a day or two depending on how busy they are. Simple cut-to-size is free like the other shops though.

I've had it done at Hornbach 'while-you-wait' but I did have to wait.

Ordering online from Coop H and Bau and selecting what you wanted and then picking up the cut pieces was much faster.

They also deliver, for a fee, which latter can be well worth it if you're busy.

Instead of a table saw, a circular saw with a straight ruler/guide can get the job done cheaply.

Depending on day of week and how many other people think they need custom cut wood the waiting time can be hours.
