How to find special size shipping box/materials--need to ship violin to US 75x25x14cm

I need to ship a violin to the US, already in a pretty durable hard case, but I think it would be best to put it in a larger box and 1) put an airtight plastic bag around the whole case 2) surround everything with soft semi insulative material. Just to regulate the atmosphere inside a bit and to protect a bit more if it gets thrown around.

Maybe in the US I would just go to a shipping store like Fedex or whatever and buy whatever they have. I know swiss Post has some shipping materials but I don't feel like I would find something with dimensions close enough. I have some boxes at home but nothing around the right dimensions.

Is there like an "office supplies" store where they would have a bunch of odd sized shipping boxes? And maybe packing peanuts and a large plastic bag and stuff? I don't mind spending some money; It's a one time thing and I kind of need to just get it done and do it right.

Or if anybody has anything I have a car and could pick up at any time. Dimensions of the hard-case are 75x25x14cm, and so several additional centimeters in 2 or 3 dimensions would be pretty good.

Or if anyone has experience with this:

https://www.post.ch/en/sending-parce...arcels/fragile

I don't know maybe I could just give them the hard case and call it a day. The case is durable like I say.

Problem is, even if Swiss Post is good about handling it, I don't know how well this "Fragile" option would carry over to whatever shipping carriers they use for the transatlantic part and for the ground shipping part in the US. I could imagine it being nothing more than a label slapped on it; not a real end-to-end special classification for the parcel.

I get packing stuff from https://www.ratioform.ch/.

Make sure you buy a strong box (from somewhere like Ratioform) rather than from Hobby und Bau, for example, and sure the carboard is double-layered for strength.

One of these should do it

I'd use bubble-wrap around the actual violin case rather than those chips as if the chips get wet, they dissolve (the organic ones do) and if the box gets a hole in it, they'll all fall out and you'll lose your protection!

Wow I like how they have a little rendering of the size of your package within the box when you do the box finder thing.

I don't see that they have big plastic bags. When I look in the Beutel section they all look small. I'm not sure I could create an airtight enclosure with the bubble wrap. I'm just thinking it would be smart to have it be relatively airtight to maintain humidity level.

In the US I would just maybe use like.. 2 layers of garbage bag or something. But like you say with the organic materials dissolving, and some garbage bags don't seem very airtight either (I mean the material; not the closure-- i could use something else around the neck of the bag to get a good closure)

Do they have one of those machines at Zürich airport, where you can wrap your luggage tightly in plastic? Would that work?

Big black thick rubbish bags should be fine.

If you fold the top over several times then tape it, it should be waterproof.

Air mail, I hope. I would add some desiccant as well...you never know when humidity will be a factor, depending on where your box sits for who knows how long at which airport.

I ship fragile stuff all the time to the US, however I never use Swisspost.

While not knowing the replacement value of your item, and in my case of course the customer normally pays for the transport, I would consider using UPS/Fedex for shipping. If something goes wrong, at least it will be a lot easier getting your insurance money. Try www.expedismart.ch

I would definitely consider fedex I'm just not familiar with what to do because in the US they have brick & mortar locations where you can just walk in. But I haven't seen any shipping outfit here that has in-person service like that besides swisspost.

Is that the right link? Isn't expedia just for travel?

Hrmmm........

Überprüfen Sie, dass die Abmessungen Ihres Pakets nicht 240 x 160 cm x 120 cm überschreiten
