Re: NYC or Zurich: Single guy, 26 y/o

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm not a party animal. I don't need to party until 4 AM, and I find Langstrasse extremely cringy and unwelcoming. For me all I'm looking for is to grab a beer with some friends after work (don't have to be coworkers).

I'm in denial of so many red flags in my head. I've been apartment hunting on flatfox and I barely see anyone looking for roommates who's under 30. I can afford my own place but I thought this can give me somewhat of a representation of what kind of people live in Zurich, as Tel Aviv is full of 20-something year old people and facebook groups are much more lively (and apartment groups as well).

I was in Zurich for 2 months total last year, at different times, and the city still felt like a museum that is nice to look at but you cant do anything with it. Covid sure has a big play in this but it just didn't feel fun. I can't imagine making friends there unless I'm part of a weekend sports group.

I keep asking myself what people do during the week, as it seems like people don't go out often. Everyone tells me they wait for the weekend (but why only go out on Friday/Saturday night?)

During the week in pre-covid times I used to go dancing, either classes with a few beers after, or to a party with a few beers during.

Otherwise during the week I often have a few people over for dinner.
I'd also pop down to the local pub during the week and there's life there, not packed but you'd find a person to talk to.

What life will be like after Covid is hard to say. It might go back to what is was before or it will be totally different. No one knows.

I grew up in Switzerland so I am in a different boat. What someone said that people keep their childhood friends because the country is so small is definitely true. It can be hard to make new friends. Shared hobbies is the easiest.

What I did during the week pre-covid? It went out with friends at least once a week (Monday to Thursday). Usually we had dinner at a restaurant somewhere. Less to a bar / a pub. I went to the cinema with friends or I went to dinner at a friends house.

But - as someone has said as well - when I went out, I went out with friends. So I was not out looking to meet new people. That makes it harder to meet people as well.

Re: NYC or Zurich: Single guy, 26 y/o

This is an easy choice if it were me.

At your age, definitely NYC, and then move to Zurich later on. Switzerland is the 6th country for me to live and I love all the experiences I have made in each place, which were all very different.

I moved to Zurich when I was 37 and by then, having already seen/done this or that, I was totally ready to move to a quieter, small but not too small, beautiful and centrally located place. Sure, restaurants are not as plenty compared to NYC, LON or TYO, but nothing beats the quality of life here overall. Also, I have not found a certain place easier or harder in terms of dating....it's what you make of it, how social you'll decide to be etc.

I do admit Switzerland has been the hardest place to make friends even when you speak the language. But again, quality over quantity right? Am sure you will make one or two good friends once you move here.

Lucky you to have these choices, you have a lot to look forward to!

Re: NYC or Zurich: Single guy, 26 y/o

At 26 - NYC, hands down.

I am so glad I had a chance to work in NYC in my 20s. It was only for a year - but what a year!

I'm not by nature a 'bright lights big city' kind o' gal, but I loved every single minute I spent in NYC. The city is... alive... in a way many other cities are not. It's hard to describe, but NYC opened my eyes, and my mind, to possibilities I never would have imagined. During that year I think I learned as much just living in the city, partaking of all that it had to offer, as I did in my professional development.

I'm now an old lady, happy to iive the quiet life in a small village. But I treasure those NYC memories, and wouldn't trade them for the world.

Zürich will still be here if you want a change a few years down the road. For now - go to New York!

As the song says, "If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere".

Re: NYC or Zurich: Single guy, 26 y/o

Hmmm. Quatsch.

Have been to both a lot - I will say something different..There will be many "you" in NYC. There won't be so many "you" in ZH. It will be harder but I think more rewarding and it will make you better. If you want just fun and games, go to NYC. If you want to get some genuine life long friends, healthy lifestyle, amazing nature at fingertips with unpretentious nature lovers, less hectic tempo and stuff that you will have to learn how to work for, go to ZH. It is less superficial and less political than the US..It will demand of you to be you and work on it. Street cred means nothing here. People take you for whoever you are. In the US, yes you can be whoever you want to become. Neither places are bad, both are awesome. But I'd start in ZH.

Hi,

I have the option to move to either NY or Zurich and I don't know which to choose.

Both will pay very well, $>250K / year. Financially Zurich probably wins but money isn't everything although it's nice to build savings faster, especially at a young age.

My concerns are the social aspects. I speak very good German and English but I feel that at 26 I should choose NY for the social aspects.

I have the option to move to Zurich now and then in a year or two move to NY if I decide that Zurich isn't my thing, so it's not the end of the world, or I can do it the other way around. I can also choose to stay permanently wherever I choose to go.

What's important to me:
I love going out with friends after work, getting drinks, enjoying diverse foods from all over the globe. I'm not a party animal but I love bars for the social aspect of meeting up with friends and having a good time over a few drinks.

I also enjoy sports and the outdoors. I snowboard every chance I get, I used to swim a lot, play tennis and squash, and just bike. I visited Zurich a few times and I enjoyed waking up when it's still dark to catch the earliest train to the Alps. Fun!

What I like about NY is the power and importance the city has. It's the center of everything and everything happens there. The variety of restaurants and bars, and the city is so big that you can't experience everything because it rapidly changes. All music festivals happen there, everything is big and exaggerated, and the US also has incredible nature (at a flying distance though...). It's limitless in potential and are what you make yourself to be.

About Zurich I will enjoy the lake in the summer (though I now have a world class beach where I live), the surrounding countries and diversity of cultures, the alps, getting out of the hustle and bustle.

I'm worried dating and the social life in Zurich is sub-par when you're in your 20s and that the city is better for people in their 30s+ and that in that regard NY is better suited. NYC is heaven with a limitless supply of girls and people my age. Zurich is tiny in comparison.

Can anyone share their experiences?
only earning > $250k? You wont be able to afford CH

When I first arrived in NYC one of the first concerts I saw was Frank Sinatra in MSG. What an experience and those words have stuck with me ever since.

There's plenty of time for him to settle down and come to Zurich. It makes zero sense to do do the settling down part before he has lived his crazy busy party and dating life that he specifically told us he wants to live. In this regard Zurich is boring as hell compared to NYC, not even comparable in terms of choice and variety. If he has the choice of coming here later, then it's an obvious choice to go for the sensational lifestyle of NYC first and then the quality of life of Zurich later.

I've been to NYC on vacation for a week and by the end of it I was glad to be moving on to our next destination (I was mid twenties at the time so certainly not age related for me). Too many people in close proximity for me, I would never want to live there.

But to each their own.

I take it you have never been to Tel Aviv? It's loud and packed, so the OP should feel right at home.

Did you actually live in ZH? It's quite different from visiting friends.

I know nothing of your priorities and your environment, but that seemed a very romanticised version of ZH. Many young people find it quite difficult to have the type of social life that OP is interested in.
