I'd personally like to see the removal of the thanks and groan buttons, neither of which add anything positive to the forum.....
FWIW, I like the thanks and groan buttons, though those labels are a bit controversial IMO. I like being able to show support, sympathy or gratitude without clogging up the forum with loads of "good post, I agree"-type messages. And I like being able to express a view that a post is ill-judged, nasty, or based on faulty information without launching some unpleasant feud. I very often do disagree and explain why but it's good to have the option not to have to post. Just my view. If there was heavy support for removing them then I'd accept that, of course.

I guess I thought of that because I remember reading a few years ago that Instagram did an experiment where only the person who made the post was able to see who had "hearted" it (or whatever). But I'm not sure why they did that or what effect it ended up having (if any).

And why is it any of your business? Have you asked any other Mods how they got their position?
He was the one who brought it up.

The other mods were announced in a special thread for that purpose so there was no need to ask, FMF wasn’t and he keeps making cryptic comments.

I don't think I made any cryptic comments, they seemed pretty direct as you would expect, I usually call a spade a spade. I even explained what triggered it
You normally have a good memory & were involved in the thread, amazed you have forgotten.

The funniest thing about the whole episode, it was triggered by me replying to your post (4th link) So one could say that you are responsible for the turn of events, thank you

Perhaps he changed his mind, or perhaps he pinged EB asking for deletion around the time the EB account was deleted. I'll message our new admin.

If he didn't delete or isn't going to, I think that taking a long break from the EF after something here really pisses you off is a very wise thing to do.

This is true, FMF was not announced. Thanks, BM, for making that point. Things were not standard, it left a lot of room for guess work. Of everyone, tbh.

So - Welcome, our new moderator FMF. Be easy on'im, sweet EFers. Or at least the 1st month or two. Merci beaucoup, on behalf of Ze Mods, etc. etc.

There weren't any really cool memes.

Speaking from experience this is true, although don't count on it being any better when you come back, I was surprised by the increase in pointless arguments.

Well, the bigger the group, the more perspectives, I guess. So the less perspectives involved, the easier a decision would be. It would certainly allow for much easier "tunnel vision."
This is in effect the "diversity is strength" argument. The more different perspectives you have on board the better you can look at a problem from all sides.

But that only works if you also value perspectives of others, even when you don't share them.

On the EF a cliquey mentality has emerged that says people I disagree with are bad. So actually more diversi ty leads to more disagreement.

How about a system that limits the amount of thanks you can give in a day . And also , analogously to rep, force you to spread it around rather than thanking the same two or three people all the time .

Given the limits of the software, is this feasible? Would be interesting to know. I guess you could just turn rep into thanks and groan.

Agree, and would like to add, it's a shame to see so much ingratitude, mindful of all the research that points to this being a core tenent of peace and connection. I can disagree with someone's perspective, but if I see they are putting a lot of effort into reseaching to help others with links and info, or taking the time to explain their ideas as kindly as possible, then the onus is on me to show appreciation for the effort they are making, I would say.

I've yet to see an example of this. I just see entrenchment in the disagreement. My rep also shows this - I've received nasty messages, when someone disagrees with me (and I'm not a nasty, mean-spirited poster intent on causing hurt), but there's silence when I help them on a thread or help others.

I don't care about the rep per se, nor the comments, as I won't ever fight fire with fire. I care about what the behaviour demonstrates - ingratitude, a rush to wound, but not to uplift.
