I thought mods have more important stuff to do than randomly checking rep messages, unless those messages were reported....or maybe you checked something else? They're kind of "private"...I thought.

Nah. Apparently mods can look at rep messages.

The mods take bullying behind the scenes very seriously.
Normal forum rules apply to rep messages, this was stated by the one of the departed mods & the rule has not changed since.
No need to actively look, they are shown on the persons profile page, if the person does not have many user messages on their page they can bee seen without even scrolling. multiple Red blobs are easy to spot.

I would be happy if they took the upfront bullying more....seriously!

But they’re only supposed to do it if the rep comments are reported, not just to randomly look on the off chance that an offence has been committed.
At least that is how I understood the explanation when it came up in the past.

Correct, I sometimes have checked before giving a poster rep myself if I have done so in the last couple of days as the spread it around block does not prevent mods giving the same person multiple rep even the same day

There are a couple of gangs that go against several posters, even some of the moderators. It’s been a problem for several years

I know because once a mod has red rep quite a few posts of mine in a thread in the same day, if I recall correctly. We've settled our little dispute later on, all is forgotten. (it doesn't even count anymore)
So these are the job's perks, eh?
