Re: Deleting My Account

I think we should change the subject and find something new to argue about.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We could all decide on a random topic. Or maybe we could argue about what the topic should be?

It would help if you mentioned what you're referring to. Thanks.
Nah, we've reached the stage of a "competent adult" (the role I somehow THOUGHT a mod should have) legitimising the use of a term that has been generally accepted as offensive by those who have an ACTUAL say on the matter. I'm not going to start legitimising the general self-congratulatory "banter" or the frankly bizarre discussion surrounding who can see what and who said what way back when. In a business context I would call this "turning your ego into a cost centre".

A message beginning with "Nah" is never a good sign. As for the rest of it, be more explicit. Everything you say is cast at a sneery angle. Why not just engage in a proper conversation? So someone has said a naughty word that's upset you -- is that the gist of it?

Oh that word.
When you said pronoun I thought you were referring to the generic pronouns we’d been discussing earlier. I couldn’t work out what was grotesque about we, you, they etc.

Not sure about it being a generational thing, we’re the same age and I was aware of it. I wouldn’t say it was specifically a medical term either.

Belgianmum, now that you are aware of so many things, if in that sentence I used the word "idiots" would that be correct ? acceptable?
Or for those who speak french, if the word was "cretins" is that word banned as well for some of you?

if someone can answer this I'd love to hear and learn something new..?

Also if you read carefully both articles you linked..you will see how they arent clear and it goes toward the idea of not using the word when there is a disabled person around or call them the r-word.

If Cliinimuus didnt do her drama and staring at the clock (waiting the word to be deleted) no one would've noticed anything since we're all adults here, we use certain expressions and understand the dept/meaning or what's pejorative use really and after all it is the context as well.

But I cant complain, since I live on a planet where I've seen in this past year how parents are putting cloth or plastic on their childs mouth, letting them play in the park and school with the niqab/burka sort of protection...obstructing the most essential element - air .. just because they obey so yeah .. the r-word, the m ,s,p,d,v, word can be banned.. People do love to live in a nanny state and do prefer authocracy more than anything. what can I say....

If anything the noun describing the condition “mental retardation” or the adjective “retarded” were in common use earlier in the 20th century. It might have been used by medical or educational personnel to describe particular persons, but I think most often it was used to describe slow or impaired.

But using it as a pejorative noun or adjective to designate what you consider foolish or stupid behavior has never really been acceptable, especially as an insult, or as sarcasm.

And Kittster - ego as a cost center has a nice ring to it

Maybe it’s cultural, as I am an American. I’ve always thought it’s wrong to call someone a retard. And describe actions I disagree with as retarded.

But then I think a bit of PCness is helpful in society as I don’t consider it impinging on my right of self expression but basic polite behavior.

But as you say, we’re all adults. I happen to think you’re wrong. That should be ok, no?

That’s not the point. The word was used in a perjorative way, it has been considered as insulting for some considerable time and in this day and age it is not acceptable to use it. End of.

Likewise for cretin, in English at least.
When I was a kid we used to use cretin all the time in a laughing joking manner when one of our mates did something daft. We didn’t know what it really meant back then and we didn’t know any better. Now we do.

There will always be unpleasant, perjorative terms used against people, it’s human nature. What we should be mindful of is not using terms that also refer to people who through no fault of their own suffer from disabilities or difficulties. (Cretin, retard, spastic etc). It’s all about respect.

retarded: Urban dictionary

Quote:
A word used to describe someone who is profoundly stupid. A type of stupidity that is an insult to intelligence itself. Politically correct people would like you to be rude to someone in a less offensive way, perhaps by calling them dumb instead. This ignores the fact that dumb, idiot, and many other similar insults used today were all old-timey technical terms for retards. It also ignores the fact that any word used to describe someone of below average ability in any area is an insult to someone with average ability or higher in that area.

<<This party is retarded.

>>Dude! You can't say that anymore. You have to say the party is lame, or it's dumb, or something else!

It’s just a good, old fashioned witch hunt, though in this case, a ‘roo shoot would be more accurate.
With a smattering of grammar policing thrown in.

Language evolves and we need to evolve with it.

Idiot was probably considered unacceptable years ago but has now become a commonly used mildly insulting word now. Idiocy is not classed as a medical condition now.
Who knows if retard will become mainstream and acceptable in the future? Maybe it will, maybe it won’t but at the current time it is not a term that should be used generally.

Cretin has not been an acceptable word for ages, I’ve not heard anyone use that term in a very long time.

Re: Deleting My Account

Maybe because you're applying some hypocrisy, you're saying all this ..

Because, as we all know, we dont call people re**rd,idiot, or debile/cretin... since it's an insult. But, how can we forbid a word that's part of our language and language is not just an alphabet, written script.. but language is alive.

If a teen pops in and says "oh parent1, you know the cat went full re*ard and jumped into the sink" what is the parent1 supposed to say "dear we dont say that word" " we say "mental disibility" , so the cat behaved as if it has a mental disibility and jumped into....

I'm only saying this because if we follow what linguists have been observing throughout years..is how this false political correctness is even more insulting.
This did happen with black people when it was rude to say "black" so we'd say people of colour but that was really rude (because of the hypocrisy) so we all went back to 'black'.

This is why, it can not be rude or inacceptable to say "the cat behaved like a re***d" .. because we can not really stop saying "idiot" or should we ban Dostoevsky's book "the Idiot" as well because someone somewhere may be offended ?

I have a feeling they are safe. There will be a group of people getting offended on their behalf.

I've had somebody calling me the r word and the d word, as "doofus", in a loving and sexy way..When somebody is in love, frustrated and mad at you, you will not get offended. Wonder what pc brigade says to "silly goose". Or PETA maybe.

Re: Deleting My Account

Are you saying language can never change.

To be honest, I think we will never agree on this ….you can call it hypocrisy and a witch hunt, but I think language evolves over time. In the end, you do you and I do me, and when we disagree…we’ll see what happens. I prefer to think about it as different opinions than more nefarious descriptions of hypocrisy and hunting witches.

I read an interesting thread about this on Reddit under the heading “change my mind” in the end some people were moved slightly, and they talked a bit about semantic drift. But there are still wide differences. And it’s important to get the lay of the land, as it were, here.
