Re: Deleting My Account

Anyway, if there are leaks then what exactly is it that the mods are worrying about and trying to hide?

Email address or other personal data leaks are worrying - and it has happened before when a mod downloaded all the personal data to his PC for his own use.

If there are leaks like this then, as users, we should be told.

Your memory is not good, you told me how the mod group works, along with your serial groans it is looking more suspicious than I originally thought.
That info in the quote by blueangel was publicly posted on here on more than one occasion by Ace1 when he was still a mod and backed up by other mods. Itís hardly a secret.
It would be impossible to run a mod team effectively if every single member had to be in agreement with every single decision. It would be ludicrous and unworkable if one mod could veto a majority decision.

Is there something in the EF rules and regulations that forbids members from knowing how the mod zone works?
Your posts on this topic make me suspicious that there is a skeleton in the mod zone to hide.
Discussions in mod zone are supposed to remain in mod zone, I have noticed posts from several posters that imply they knowledge of things they should not know about.
I was actually expecting a different yet legitimate answer, much too much on the defensive if you ask me.

Indeed, I was surprised by the defensive response, when people have info that they should not it becomes difficult to remember what is public domain & what is not.

I was thinking back to an incident from many years before I came to Switzerland and joined EF, but your response makes it apparent that I've accidentally hit a nerve.

Curiouser and curiouser.

How would that incident have any bearing on how EF works?

Re: Deleting My Account

wow, Tom seems to be in some real cowboy mode here insulting germans, then this topic inspired by Tom's work, then Tom's comments hit below the belt and gets away with it not even a scratch..and all that's fine with the usual "la justicia divina" group here who are tearing me apart for even making an abstract joke and me I'm having the mods giving me yellow cards

Anyhow, even if there's a discussion about levi's 501 it'll end up with a talk about ftf and MC being mods. It's almost an algorithm

There probably was a firm 'original intention' but original intentions are allowed to change, either consciously or organically, and 15 or so internet years is a very long time. I disagree about the Facebook groups.

I'm not even sure that it's so very different. I started using the forum in 2009 before I arrived here, and despite all the very useful information, I found it a pretty cliquey and hostile place unless, as a newbie, you expressed yourself in the right way. It took me a while to work out that I had to be sort of deferential and ask nothing that could be perceived as uppity or revealing any character weakness. This ignoble tradition persists, with newbies who complain about parking/speeding fines, or horrible neighbours/landlords, or who need help after experiencing a work or relationship problem. usually inviting a merciless pile-on from all the usual suspects. There are pockets of extreme smugness, hostility, intolerance and unkindness here, and there always have been.
Pachy - I think you described poignantly some stuff that happens, generally, in online communities. It is really true. It is like really painful baby-teething we have to get through. I think you are dead correct about some of the negative things we see imature people engage in..

I do have to say that, no matter how abnoxious that is, I do not think that it is exclusive to our EF. And that these catharctic spats would be the most we can get from our community. Nor that we mods can really weed it out by over-bearing stern moderation. Community's and our ocassional intervention helps but I think people are growing out of that toxic, mobby and negative attitude, honestly. It will just take a bit longer.

On the other hand, there are so many more positive and smart things about EF than what you described, that I am not panicking. I do think that it is good for us to be reminded, though, so - thanks.

If you think it is legitimate to share information, may we at least know which mod is the source of the information?

If it was legitimate to share it, they wouldn't need to be hiding the fact.

There are doubtless many positive things about EF. I'm not even saying that EF is worse than other internet forums. Indeed it's significantly better than many I've known. I was answering a previous poster who said that it is much worse than it used to be. Maybe it has got worse, I don't know, but my point was that I don't remember it ever being a wholly happy-clappy, friendly place, especially to new members. There's always been a very grumpy fringe of cliquey, long-time users. But it's true that there has also always been a majority of helpful, pleasant members, and long may that continue.

Sharing private information about members is definitely against EF rules, please tell us which mods did this.

I think he is trying to be funny but I canít be sure as the massive wall of text is just off putting and I canít be bothered to read it.

As for the rest of it I completely agree.

Maybe thatís the way the Local wants the forum to go but itís very far removed from what it was when I joined.

It really isnít the friendly, helpful place it once was. I can quite see why newbies donít stick around anymore given they way theyíre treated most if the time.
Fairdinkum's female, the rather aggressive tone is misleading.
I've tried reading her posts but find them hard to follow due to the lack of proper punctuation and fake-angry gabbling... tricky to make any sense of whatever nonsense it is they're banging on about.

I regrets Jim's decision to leave; although I haven't always agree with him he's been consistently helpful to anyone in need of advice.
And he's had the decency to tell us the why of it beforehand, rather than get someone else to pass on their (post-flounce) leaving message.
