Replacement key in Switzerland

Hi everyone my tenant who has been staying in my apartment with me has lost the key and I need to get a quotation on a replacement for him to pay.

I have had suggestions to go over to France and get a new one done

Where should I do any recommendations near Basel area? How much would this cost any one with any experience?

Re: Replacement key in Switzerland

Is it a Kaba/security key? Of so use search function - these keys can only be done with strict security measures.

Go to Mr. Minute and ask them. If itís Security Protected they will tell you. If you are the owner you should have the documentation necessary to have a duplicate made. If you are not, you should ask the owner.

Re: Replacement key in Switzerland

Do it by the book and charge the costs to your tenant, they should have been more careful.

Re: Replacement key in Switzerland

If the tenant lost the key nearby and there is even the slightest risk of the key being used to access the apartment, a new lock will become necessary. You will be liable for the costs calculated pro rata Temporis on an assumed 30 year lifetime of a lock. If there is no chance of the key being misused, you just need to pay the replacement of the key, costs start at around CHF 250 but can be up to CHF 500 depending on the model. The locksmith cannot legally copy a Kaba key without a specific document that the landlord has. Any locksmith who does it regardless is breaking the law.

I thought we established in a thread a few weeks ago that was not actually true. Depending on the age of the DESIGN of the lock it may well be out of copyright protection. Patents last 20 years from when a new patent went into effect, so unless it's a new design still protected your local locksmith may well be able to make a copy.

And I still maintain that the owner of the lock has the final say over how many keys are made to fit the lock. The whole point of the system is to avoid any unknown keys floating about.
