Best online German-English Dictionary

I find the best online German-English dictionary to be the one from the Münich University.

http://dict.leo.org/?lang=de&lp=ende

There are little buttons at the end of each word for grammar and definitions.

Re: Best online German-English Dictionary

Sometimes I can't find a word in one dictionary and use several ones. A different source is e.g. http://www.dict.cc/

I used the Babylon tool in the past as well, which is quite handy, when being offline. You can also create your own glossaries with the builder.

The ultimate collection of online dictionaries might be this one:

Re: Best online German-English Dictionary

I've also found Leo to be an excellent resource, and they have added lots of extras to it over the years. I especially appreciate the forums and other tools you can make use of when you encounter those situations where you can't directly map a word between English and German to get the precise meaning or nuance that you need.

Re: Best online German-English Dictionary

There is a new version of the free German/English dictionary tool LingoDict out:
http://www.ego4u.com/en/lingodict

Contains apparently over 220,000 entries and is based on the online version of http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/

The download is about 5.9 MByte in size.

Re: Best online German-English Dictionary

I would like to add that most dictionaries can be accessed easily from most browsers using a variety of plugins. I use Mozilla (currently 4 Beta) and consult dictionaries through the search box. Here are links to the Leo and dict.cc plugins. You will probably find a link to a plugin on almost any dictionary's home page.

Re: Best online German-English Dictionary

Leo is somewhat focused for native German speakers. For example, a normal German-English dictionary will indicate the plural forms of the German nouns, and leo often doesn't include that detail.

That said, it is quite handy, especially for slightly less common words and expressions.
