How easy is it to find a rental property that has outside access and will allow cats

Good afternoon everyone
In the next couple of months I will be moving over to Switzerland to join my other half. We have 2 fab cats that are part of our family.

After looking at rental properties, it seems like ground floor apartments are like gold dust and the listings do not provide any details of catflaps / outdoor access or if pets are allowed.

The thought of having to rehome my boys is not one I choose to entertain so I'm getting slightly panicky!

Is it as hard as it looks to find a rental property that has outside access and will allow cats?
Many thanks for all contributions!

It would be helpful if you gave a location. In general, you can probably find something but will have to have a longer commute into the area where you might be working.

Good afternoon to you, too.

I think your main concern will be finding a ground floor or first floor apartment in a nice neighbourhood. They are very lenient towards pets in Switzerland, and your cats shouldn't be much of an impediment so far as getting a flat is concerned. The rental agencies don't seem to care about pets nearly as much as they do in other places I've lived.

However, it's true that a flat with garden access is a prized possession, so you best bet is to look outside of the cities and town centres. In villages you're more likely to find a place on the ground floor, and you'll also have the advantage of better out-of-doors territory for your cats to wander in.

Cat ladders are very popular here:

Not all are as fancy as this one, but they serve the same purpose. Most of the ones I've seen give access to a window on the ground or first floor: I've not seen any cat doors here, so I suspect they aren't very common. (They're not Swiss, but my parents have trained their cats to knock on the window to be let in, so they've never needed a cat door. I guess Swiss cats use the same system?)

Hope this helps,

Heather

One problem you might be confronted with is that even in a ground floor flat, access may come through a main door, corridor, then door to your own flat. Access to the 'garden' would often be through 'French windows' leading on to the patio. In 'High ground floor' flats (Hoch parterre - about eight steps up from ground level, but only cellars and laundry underneath them) folk seem to have 'steps' up over the balcony for their cats. How the cat gets into the flat? No idea. I have seen sets of cat-steps up to a first floor too, so other cat-lovers must be faced with the same situation.

I don't think that ads usually say anything about pets. One just has to ask. Along the lines of - we do have two other members of the family who live with us. They are very quiet, don't listen to music or flush the toilet after 10.p.m., don't slam doors, don't smoke, don't grill on the balcony - in fact, they are perfect tenants. They just happen to be feline.
Hope you find something suitable.

Many thanks everyone.

I've ordered a cat ladder and am hoping to train my boys over the next couple of weeks. Should be fun!

Thanks again for your advice.

Not every landlord/owner will allow you to install a cat ladder, and even if it is allowed, you need to request permission. There may be objections from others in the building. When you move, you will need to remove the ladder and the area where it was installed has to look just as it did before the ladder was placed there. Permission to keep pets is needed in any event.

A tip, not sure if you need it, but if you have double glazing, you can still get one of those cat doors installed. I imagine it is expensive but they work fine. If you rent though, you would have to ask permission, and probably replace the window the hole was drilled into when you leave. But this might be worth it....
