minimum age for a pet to move country ?

Hello, any help greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know the minimum age and requirements before you can take a kitten abroad (back to the UK basically). Does it make any difference if it is a visit only and you are returning to CH ? I am told you have to have it microchipped and a rabies injection but if you have those done can it then move immediately ?

thanks

Mike

Someone with more clear facts will respond I'm sure but I know the UK is very strict.

We updated a dog from someone who was returning to the UK because the blood tests for rabies weren't acceptable for the UK authorities.

Good luck

Cheers
Nats

So far as I know there's a 6 month waiting period from having your pet's blood tested to being allowed to move it between countries. I checked this info's still valid on the DEFRA website:

Think it's possible. Depends if the kitten will be old enough to get the required shots.

There's a "PETS Helpline" on that page. Has an email address. Give them a shout. I think it'll all work out for you

Re: minimum age for a pet to move country ?

For a dog.
Get dog microchipped, send off appropriate paper work and get passport.
Get Rabies injection.
Get blood test to make sure rabies injection was successful (it isn't always and you will need to repeat)
I think we had to wait 1 month before the blood test.

Once you have a successful blood test you must wait 6 months. Then your pet is free to travel abroad and come back.
You can take your pet outside of the UK before the 6 months, but must wait 6 months before they can come back.
When returning to the UK your pet must have a tick and worm injection not more than 24hours but not less than 48hours before crossing into England.
Get it done on Monday at 8am means you can't cross until 8am on Tuesday, but you must go before 8am on Wednesday. (This is to get back into the UK only)

Basically the answer to your question is if you want to leave the UK and come back your animal will have to be at least 7 months old to have gone through all the necessary injections etc.
10 months+ is a much more reasonable assumption.

Once you have the pet passport completed make sure you keep your rabies up to date. In Europe the rabies injections lasts 3 years, but in the UK it is only valid for 1 year, so ignore whatever your vet here says and get your pet vaccinated against rabies yearly (do not miss the date or you will have to redo the entire process - blood test, 6month wait etc.)
The UK is very strict and they will refuse your pet entry unless everything is 100% correct. e.g. if you have the right injections but have the stamp in the wrong column you will be refused entry.

No, not to the UK, it is not possible until the animal is vaccinated. From the page you linked:

"The UK does not allow the entry of unvaccinated dogs and cats, and animals may not be vaccinated against rabies until they have reached the minimum age for vaccination (as stated on the vaccine manufacturer's datasheet). To enter the UK they must then be prepared in accordance with all the requirements explained on the PETS website, taking account of the required order of preparation. "
