Cheapest way of getting about 40kg of stuff from Zurich to UK

Hi,

I'm moving back to the UK in about a month. I've got about 2 suitcases worth of stuff, but no suitcases. My options are either i) box it all up and get it delivered, or 2) buy some sort of cheap bags and pay excess luggage charges. Can anyone either:

i) Recommend a company which will deliver this amount of stuff to the UK for a reasonable price (I don't mind how long it takes).

and/or ii) Suggest somewhere in Zurich I can buy some sort of dirt-cheap bags for taking them on a flight. I have luggage back in the UK, so don't want to "invest" in luggage, and all the suitcases I've seen in the department stores are pretty pricey. I've seen in other countries large, square, zippered bags that are made out of a vinyl-y raffia and are invariably white with blue and red check and cost next to nothing - does anyone know anywhere in Zurich or online that I can get some of these?

Thanks in advance!

Box it up and take it as luggage. Airlines don't specify it has to be suitcases

I've seen some cheap zip-up large box-type bags in Ikea.

Depending on what you have to ship I would suggest that you go in one of two directions. I would not however try to use cardboard. I can't count the number of times I have see clothing falling out of boxes (taped and tied) as the box rolls down the luggage ramp.

Option one is to look at the cheaper ethnic stores around the train station (sorry I don't know Zurich very well). They often have very inexpensive luggage that would be good enough for a one way trip. Some of them are zip style that can be expanded to take more stuff.

Option two (if we are just talking about clothing) is to find plastic bags like this one at the same style of inexpensive store. They come in different sizes and with a zipper.

In any event, check the website of the airline you will use for the maximum dimensions and weight per bag for European flights. Every airline seems to have their own rules.

One think to remeber is the excess luggage is limited! It is not just a question of being willing to pay the extra charge, there has to be space to fit it in - as my wife discovered on one occasion with Swiss..... she was on of the last to book in and she was told sorry, they had already reached max. luggage weight.

Have you checked out UPS and DHL? Last year I shipped 50Kg of stuff from South America to here for around $40.

Good luck,

Jim

Thanks all for some great suggestions and advice. Jim - that's a good thing to know! If I take it in the plane I'll be sure to check in early.
