| | libraries in Lausanne
hello everyone,
i've got a job offer in Lausanne, thinking of accepting it
visited Lausanne this week and liked it, although it was raining/snowing and people were speaking French
is it possible to find a library in Lausanne that offers a fair selection of recent english-'languaged' CD's and DVD's for a decent price (like the libraries in UK) - would municipal Lausanne library do the trick? i checked Lausanne city library website, but it was not helpful
i went to my local (UK) library today and borrowed
A Mighty Wind - Soundtrack
Can - Tago Mago
Ray Lamontagne - Trouble
Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out
and a few movies
would it be possible to do smth similar in Lausanne?
thank you!
have a nice day, with all the best wishes
if i offended anyone - i did not mean it, honestly
disclaimer - the message was written after consuming a bottle of port
p.s. i am going to miss England

Hi RussianGuy,
I've not tried the Lausanne library, but from this link, you can search their catalogs: http://bml.lausanne.ch/en/index.html
Apart from that, there are several books shops in Lausanne that have English sections, and you can always order from Amazon...although you may get hit with tax when getting it delivered.
It's a big decision to make, but for me personally...I have never regretted leaving the UK for here.
Best of luck with your decision, and enjoy the port!!

| | Fnac has a decent section...
Hi - there are quite a few libraries, but the best selection is at FNAC. Fnac is down on the Flon area (in front of movies theatres and restaurants, that will be the first area you will find in Lausanne!), and has expanded their English section a couple of years ago. It is still not overwhelming, but it has several types (not only the aereoport blockbusters).
Of course, Amazon is the other option. To avoid the killer taxes one pays if ordering from the US, the trick is to order on Amazon.de, but select the book based on the IS code (you look for the book on Amazon.com, find the code, and order on Amazon.de)....
HEHE. It works like a charm. The books are a tad more expensive (no sales), but the shipping is cheaper and the taxes are avoided.

oops sorry - I realize that you are asking about libraries, not book stores... my mistake.
There is an english section at the university library (the most extensive), including other foreign literatures (italian, spanish, german, etc)... but it is mostly historical literature, there is little recent.
Check out bookcrossing, it is fairly active in Switzerland, and you may find ppl willing to swap...

hi LoyalRoyal and lilith,
thank you for the replies
did accept a job in Lausanne, so as soon as all formalities are done . . .
i very much enjoy libraries in US and England where for a small fee it is possible to borrow recent DVD's and CD's for a week or two, in US it was all free, in England in my local library it is about 80 p for a CD or 1 GBP for a DVD (it turned out that sometimes in England it's cheaper to rent DVD's from the city libraries than from the dedicated video rental stores)
thought that smth similar would be available in Lausanne

nah - only books here...
I know in the US you can get all sort of DVDs, but here you pay 7.- chf for a ONE night rental... a real rip-off. I've been thinking of renting out my private collection ;P I end up buying them in the east for cheap... or e-baying whole series so that I enjoy what I watch.

We use them and are really happy with them.
