Bern: Protection for women information.

I'd like to pass this marvelous piece of information on here, to help get this known about.

On reading it, I was moved to write to Mr Lash, to ask if I could re-post this wonderful offer, to which he replied yes, as it is difficult to get word out, so do tell your wives, girlfriends, friends, sisters,Mums and Grandmas about this as well.

Copied and pasted from Graham Tritts Swisscc site.

Dear Graham,
Hope you are well.

I would like you to let your readers know that there are men
from the Tai Chi School "Harmonische Drachen" who have decided
to provide a free security escort for women so that women are
safer in Bern. These men are called "Wu Shi".

Beginning on the 28th of November from 10PM to 1am there will be
at least 2 Wu Shis every Friday night under the new outdoor roof
in front of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). They will be
standing by the telephones. If a woman is out late and fears she
is being followed, or is afraid to walk across the town to her car,
apartment, or the Parking Garage, she can contact the Wu Shis and
one will escort her and defend her from attack if necessary.

This service includes taking the bus or tram with her to her
neighborhood and walking her to her door. If possible, there will
be a Wu Shi outside the Inselspital from 10:30PM to 11:30 PM to
escort nurses finishing the late shift to the Hauptbahnhof, and
at the Lindenhofspital from 10:30PM to 11:30PM to escort women
to the Park & Ride or to the Längasse bus.

Because there are few of us, we can only provide this service
on Fridays. We will do Saturday nights also when there are more
of us. The Wu Shi can be recognised by his long, dress-like,
baggy black pants called a "Hakama" in Japan.

Also, please inform women that a new series of free emergency-self
defense courses for women begin in January. There will be three:
(1) Every Wednesday morning from 9:30am-10:30am beginning 14 January,
(2) Every Wednesday from 12-1PM also beginning on the 14th, and
(3) Every Friday evening from 8-9PM beginning on 16 January.

We have a Tai Chi course beginning on 12 January, every
Monday night from 8-10PM.

Thanks
John Lash

Dear Graham, Thanks for the idea. We should have a common handy nr.
My wife said that. I'll talk it over with her. Anyone who wished to
help would need to meet and talk with me and would need to wear a
Hakama. Any one who would help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a few extra ones to lend out. What we really need is a
way to get the word out. Thanks again, Graham. John Lash

Ros

Re: Bern: Protection for women information.

So, er, if you're a man who feels threatened, would like an escort home etc. you're on your own? Or do you just call the police as one ought to?

There's something slightly odd about this offer. Especially the bit about wearing Far Eastern dress in public on a Friday night. The opposite of discretion.

Re: Bern: Protection for women information.

I have no knowledge about Tai chi, so here is my question:

Can you defend yourself by practicing Tai chi?

If you told me it is Aikido, kick boxing, judo, etc... I will have no doubt!

There's nothing odd about something which is called publicity.

Hence, the wearing of the Hakama which is prominent and an easily describable attire, in case the woman themselves were the victim of these "Watchmen". [/quote]

Tai Chi Chuan, despite the slow movement, it is said to be one of the deadliest form of the Chinese martial art.

Uncle Max??

I'm absolutely sure if you or any other male were feeling threatened and needed to be escorted home, they would I'm quite sure, be happy to accommodate you....

The police can't be everywhere as neither can these volunteers, but if you are in need and one can't help, the other one might be able.

The garb, one may suppose, be likened to any type of uniform = recognizable...

I could go on, but if you have more queries, I suggest you take them up withthe man himself, I am sure he could allay any other thoughts or suspicions you have.

Well, you brought it up here

It's the presumption of authority implied by a 'uniform' and acting as unofficial, unvetted and self-appointed guardians which smells odd.

It's commendable concerned citizens care enough to be involved in their community, but it does smack of a cheap publicity campaign. Has it been in the local free rag, yet?

Hi Max,
there is is this(in German and a few months old, sorry) or this, also in German I'm afraid, which is ironic in it's own way,,,,, Plus a little bit of background.
Plus all sorts of other info on the net about the man responsible, himself.

Actions speak louder than words or expensive and wasteful -only to be thrown, barely noted, only to be thrown in the rubbish- fliers/ads.

The good thing about Bern is, it still has a real small town flavour, you can be sure if some one should make a wrong step, then every one will get to hear about it.
As well, as it was brought to my attention through Graham Tritts site (Graham has been living and is very involved in Bern for many years and would quickly squash anything he felt to be, untoward.), that lends credence to it for me as well.

If, through their presence in Bern, even one woman (person) should be spared from trauma in this sense, then I feel it is a worthy project.
So even if it is, in part self-promontory, I'm still happy to support this and spread the word around.

It says a lot too, (to me anyway) that others are willing to take part in this generous project,,, you have to be pretty sincere to inspire others to give up their free time like this, with no tangible reward.

Re: Bern: Protection for women information.

Does anyone have statistics on attacks in Bern? I'd be interested not just in how often attacks occur overall, but a breakdown of numbers of male vs female victims.

The intentions behind this plan seem commendable, but I have to say it makes me uneasy. For one thing it could encourage women to be unnecessarily fearful. The implication is that the Hauptbahnhof is an unsafe area for a woman on her own, but safe enough for a man on his own in baggy black pants. That seems dubious to me. If I did feel unsafe in Bern (and I rarely do), I am not sure I would feel safer for being accompanied by a man in conspicuous Wu Shi garb.

Re: Bern: Protection for women information.

In 2007 there were 20'415 criminal acts registered in the city of Bern. Of these, there were 18 cases of rape and 22 cases of sexual assault (Nötigung). For more statistics, please go to the link below. It is in German, if you need help translating, just let me know.

http://www.polizeibericht.ch/ger_det...tadt_Bern.html

Please be aware that these are registered cases. There are certainly others which do not get reported.
