Where can I find a good place to buy wood/chipboard for shelves?

Hello,

Sorry if this has an obvious answer...but I'm after a shop/company near Horgen or Zurich where I can buy large sizes of wood/timber/chipboard so I can make some shelves and wall brackets for them. I have to attach them onto concrete walls.

Ikea only seem to seem small shelves and I'm not after a shelving unit. I have to make up a large bespoke shelf, due to the shape of the wall.

I need wood about 128cm long x 50 cm wide.....

Can anyone point me to the right place?

Many thanks

Have you tried Coop Bau and Hobby? You can order wood/boards cut to size at the service desk.

You can also order at certain Migros shops (those with the "Do It + Garden" product range). In Zurich, I think Brunaupark and Lindenplatz offer this service for example.

Bauhaus sells those and has a very large selection and they will cut it to whatever size you want.

Be careful how you transport it home!
THE DUMBEST HOME REPAIR GUY !
This picture is real - not doctored in any way -was taken by a Transportation Supervisor for a company that delivers building materials in Ontario, Canada.

The car is still running, as can be witnessed by the exhaust.
The driver finally came back after the police were called from the sub station across the road, and he was found crouched behind the rear of the car, attempting to cut the twine around the load!
Luckily, the police stopped him and had the load removed.
Their store manager said they made the customer sign a waiver.
While the plywood and 2X4's are fairly obvious, what you can't see is the back seat, which contains 10 bags of concrete @ 80 lbs. each.
They estimated the load weight at 3000 lbs.
Both back tires exploded, the wheels bent and the rear shocks were driven through the floorboard.

MarieZug, Nathu and Bauhaus thanks for your answers!

I got the required wood from the "Do It + Garden" Migros at Brunaupark.
Thank you!

Deep Purple very funny and nice to have the true background to that situation - a photo which I've seen many times before.

Re: Where can I find a good place to buy wood/chipboard for shelves?

Just a further update to this posting on this very useful forum.

Though the "Do It + Garden" Migros at Brunaupark was good for wooden shelves and lengths of wood and timber in general it was NOT good for shelving supports/systems.

You know the kind of thing. Metal supports which you screw onto a wall and then clip on shelf supports. The upright metal supports have lots of slots so you can place the shelf supports at different heights.

The Coop Bau and Hobby (as MarieZug mentioned) is by far better for shelving systems and shelving supports.

I went to the Coop Bau and Hobby in Pfäffikon and it is brilliant for all kinds of building and Hobby/Arty stuff! Lots of Hobby and Arty stuff for your children and you to buy!

On the building side of things; it had the largest section of screws/nuts and bolts that I have ever seen. More importantly it had the metal shelving supports and system that I needed.

Re: Where can I find a good place to buy wood/chipboard for shelves?

I am in the need of 3 pieces of "aglomerado con melamina blanca" (that is in Spanish, don't know the English for this) of about 40 cm × 50 cm each. Is there any place where I can buy these small pieces and they can cut it to the exact size I need? It is for adding shelves in a wardrobe. This is a picture of this material:

The english for "aglomerado con melamina blanca" is White MFC - White Melamine Faced Chipboard.

I'm looking forward to seeing just how long that word is in German!

Kind regards

Re: Where can I find a good place to buy wood/chipboard for shelves?

Aglomerado lacado (en espanol ) (or MDF, indeed) can be ordered and bought in any shape and form from the ' local ' carpenters that manufacture kitchens ' to measure'.

Nevertheless, it will cost an arm and a leg. (vamos, un ojo y la yema del otro).

It would be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand old IKEA PAX for a few francs in Tutti, ricardo or the alike, and get the pieces that you need...

Coop Bau und Hobby - 19mm thick, don't know if that is the quality you need:

https://bauundhobby.ch/bauen-renovie...9mm/p/6700143#

They have a cut-to-order service as well.

Use the Filial search feature to see if it is in stock at a B/H near you.

Most cupboards here are standard width in +/- 50cm increments so there is probably a shelf that fits without cutting from Micasa, Ikea ect. If you search a cupboard planner you will see the exact size of components. Eg. https://micasa.atbit-konfigurator.de...0B7S8XD&page=0

I've used this service for the same stuff and they can even laminate the cut edge for you too.

Ordering online is easy too.

Having said that, they also do some standard sizes pre-cut so it may be better to get one of these (and if slightly too big, get them to chop the extra piece off).

Don't think that's the same stuff. MDF is Medium Density Fibreboard. It's a different material from MFC - Melamine Faced Chipboard - with different structural properties. It's heavier and usually stronger, for a start. It cuts, routs and sands more like real wood, where as MFC basically splinters/crumbles.

It's to do with the size of the partcles (wood chips vs wood fibres) and the amount of resin binder holding them together

Kind regards

Jumbo too have a cut to order service. They have a good selection of MDF with varying density. It is even possible to order mirror, glass and sheet metal cut to size, but that takes a few weeks. Wood is cut to size in store... At least in the Jumbo in Coppet. Pricewise, I thought the cost was quite OK. I made a 3 quarter ping pong table for my kids for about 80chf including paint.
