Recycling Electronics (Zurich)

Hi All

would somebody happen to know how and where the happy Swiss people recycle electronics? In particular I have some old cell phones I want to bring to a recycle station ... I seem to remember that certain stores take these. Is that right and which stores might this be?

Many thanks - much appreciated.

Nic

Any electronic shop will take old items (migros electronics, fust, interdiscount, media markt etc).

Assuming that the mobile phones still work, you can take them to a Swisscom shop (please bring the charger/books etc) and I think that they give them to a charity that in turn sells them in Africa at a price that the people can afford.

I haven't done this myself but I seem to remember seeing an article on this in one of the local newspapers.

If it works, please update the thread.

Best.

Is this true of all kinds of items? Like old power cords, earbuds, hot plates, broken rice cookers -- that kind of stuff too?

Which part was not clear? You bring your microwave to an electronics shop near you and dump it at their recycle counter for free.

The answer was stated above:

Any electronic shop will take old items (migros electronics, fust, interdiscount, media markt etc).

Find the nearest one to you and dump it there.

What is the Advance Recycling Fee for my equipment?

An Advance Recycling Fee (ARF) has been charged on all new electronic and electrical equipment in Switzerland since 1994. It is used for recycling the equipment in line with environmental regulations, for recovery of materials and for appropriate disposal of non-reusable materials and pollutants. SWICO Recycling guarantees that all equipment that reaches its partners will be recycled in line with environmental requirements.

So it is fee-less to dump it.

My son likes to build his own electronics from old monitors, over head projectors, etc. I took some of these contraptions to a Migros Electronics store for recycling and they took them with no questions asked!

Is this the case even if the items were not purchased in CH?

If you buy a new mattress you can usually return the old one to the store of purchase.

I think the official way is to come round my way and leave it on the street outside my appt with a handwritten sign saying 'gratis', thats what everyone else does.

but not to be an entirely info-free post, at Sihl City, the mediamarket electronics recycling is (or at least was, a year ago) in the basement of Sihl City, about 100m along from the #89 bus stop, near the car parking. Theres an area of industrial bins where you can put your electronics.

Btw, thanks for the info on the "Advance Recycling Fee" now I don't care about higher prices on electronics here.
