Public Libraries with English collection

Do you know of any public libraries that have a good collection of English books?

Don't know what you mean by 'good' but both Zug and Cham Gemeinde libraries have decent selections. I'm sure Lucerne and Zurich would have bigger collections.

The library in Baden does, and they get new titles on a regular basis. They also have French and Italian books, though the selection is smaller.
It's definitely worth a look if you're ever in that area.

In Langenthal library, we have one of the crappiest selections of English books available the world over, I should think.......

I'm sure Machu Picchu has it better.

Several of them were donated by me! Sorry if you don't like my taste in books! They are always happy to receive donations so why not make a contribution....

Aarau, the town library more so than the cantonal one (especially because in the cantonal library it's not clear from the catalogue what language the book is in, and only a small proportion of the books are available on shelves you can browse through. Normally you have to order books you want to read).

Re: Public Libraries with English collection

Phos, the Uni Zentralbibliothek in Zurich (Predigerplatz, just off Niederdorf) is open to anyone. I still have a card from my student days, and I love that library.

Note: the first time can be weird because you have to leave all your things in a locker before they let you in, it's an obligatory security measure.

Try nebis.ch

This database enables you to access books from a whole range of libraries, including ETH, the main library and a whole host of others. You can do it all in English, too. It's free to join and you just need to adopt one of the libraries as your host library, which means signing up for membership.

Re: Public Libraries with English collection

The Basel library system has an OK amount of English novels (at least the last time I was there!). The university library is also open to the public.

Re: Public Libraries with English collection

Another good database is http://opac.rero.ch/gateway?lng=en
It is complementary to the database mentioned by tildaoz - it covers the Western Switzerland (Fribourg, Geneva, Valais, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura). It enables you to access books from all those libraries + interlibrary loan + e-docs + e-journals. You can do your search (advanced) in English, by keyword, language, place of publication, etc. You don't need to join.

Good luck with your search !

Lenna

Re: Public Libraries with English collection

Pestalozzi is a great place and it only costs around 35 CHF for a library card (less if you are a student). They've got a good selection and they've also got a great dvd and music collection.

English language libraries

I am studying at the Uni Bern and I was wondering what English language resources exist here in Switzerland. Is there an inter-library system set up within the country or are there limited options?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Public Libraries with English collection

If you're at the Uni, you should check wit the library staff - they do have a fairly extensive library with many English journals, online stuff and as a student, you should have access to their resources. There is some sharing between unis as well.

Because of copyright issues, you need to have an affiliation with the university to use their resources, so they are fairly strict about authentication and so forth, but again, as a student, just check with the library staff and they should help you.
