Importing/Buying a bicycle from abroad advice

I'm looking into buying a bicycle from England and was wondering what the process regarding tax or import duty is.

I'm looking at having the bike shipped to me and due to the current exchange rate it is considerably cheaper than buying from CH.

Is it possible to claim the UK VAT back from a mail order purchase or has anyone ever done anything similar? Any info appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt.

Re: Importing/Buying a bicycle from abroad advice

hello,

Can only help on a small point - am sure others have much more experience.

when I have bought large items on mail order from the uk - the company have not charged me the uk VAT and instead provided the information needed for customs - i have then been presented with a customs bill when the item was delivered (think it was about 10% - would need to check)

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was hoping that I'd pay the UK shop the price, less VAT and then pay the Swiss VAT which I think is 7.9% when I received the bike.

That is exactly what should happen, although you'll probably also pay a customs handling fee of about 40 CHF (the amount depends on the shipping company).

Re: Importing/Buying a bicycle from abroad advice

Hi, I have imported some guitars from the UK several times and the process has always been for me in that the UK company does not charge the VAT, but the retail value is listed on the import papers.

The tax here in Switzerland is then paid when I get an invoice from customs here, or if less than a couple of hundred franks it is paid to the TNT/Post guy when he delivers and a receipt given.

I don't do anything special, this happens automatically, sometimes I get an invoice for the tax otherwise I pay the delivery guy.

is this the same when you order goods from the US i.e talking off the VAT in the states when you purchase the item.

Re: Importing/Buying a bicycle from abroad advice

I'm going to Decathlon in Germany to buy a bike as it's considerably cheaper than here and I'm considering to go there by car (too far for going by train), load it in the car and then cross back the border.

Now considering the bike will show off as brand new is there a possibility that they will stop me and ask for import duties to be paid?

I just want to do a rough calculation before getting "caught" in action... let me explain.
German VAT is 19%, Swiss VAT is 7.6%.
Let's say they stop me and I have to pay import duties.
What is the story about, just pay the 7.6% of Swiss VAT and then claim back the 19% of German VAT? In that case it would be even convenient to declare it.

Are there other import fees to be paid on top of this? Please note that I'm not importing it by post or plane, but I'm going there to buy it personally and then drive it back to Switzerland with the car.

Thanks to anyone who will clarify...

This thread discusses the process.

No customs officer in sight ... now what?

Maybe it would be advisable to discuss the process with the retailer before you buy so you know where you are..
