Living expenses in Switzerland for young guy

I was just wondering as I'm moving there soon - general living expenses, what is "normal"?

For example I'ma single young guy so obviously I kind of eat alot...

Rent including bills - I'm thinking for a 1 bedroom place I'm going to be looking at something around 700 - 1200 CHF

Food - (Monthly food expense for a single young guy like me) - No idea

Monthly Leisure expenses - (Gym membership/Internet) - No idea

Mainly these things are what I need and will use so any thoughts as to a normal amount I'm looking at?

Thanks

Re: Living expenses in Swiss for young guy

You can do a virtual weekly shop here to work out the cost of your food bills.

Check out this lot to find the cost of gym membership.

And here's a place to start looking at accommodation.

For 700-1200 CHF...you will not find your own 1 bedroom place unless you are living somewhere in the countryside...even then 1200 is probably the minimum you would pay. It would help if we knew where you intend to live.

Food: I spend at least 750 chf a month on food and that is with eating out very seldom. You can spend much less if youre a grass eater.

A half decent gym will cost about 700 francs a year aand

Internet will be 50-75 dependng on provider and speed......

Yes, you will keep getting "weird" answers. Therefore, please search and form your own opinions, based on what you know about your lifestyle.

I live in Zurich city (Seebacherplatz) in a furnished apartment (1.5 zimmer), own bath/equipped kitchen, bathtub, and practically anytime access to washing machine, and within 5 mins of tram/train/shops/post office etc. I pay 800 gross pm.

As for food, I know couples who spend around 300-400 total for fresh and clean veggie homefood, they seem to look healthy and happy. I spend around 600 as I am a bit lazy to cook, eat mostly at ETH mensa. There would be people who feel you will starve if you don't spend 2000 CHF on food. Everyone is right in their own right...hope you get the message Please use the links provided by sandgrounder and form your own estimates.

EASY TIGER

Be careful of the Swiss/German concept of counting rooms, as opposed to the UK where you judge bedrooms.

2-Zimmer is probably little more than a bedroom and living room. Use the www.homegate.ch. website and check out some floor plans

Best of luck

Re: Living expenses in Switzerland for young guy

2 rooms means a living room and one bedroom. 1 room means a bedsit with bathroom, more or less. Do look at the m2... a 3 room, 30m2 wouldn't be too glam! and if they don't provide photos...

Re: Living expenses in Switzerland for young guy

In response to another of your questions, Cablecom (cable TV) with a large amount of cable channels (all the freeview english ones and a couple of movie channels), medium speed internet and phone costs me about 100CHF a month....sometimes less.

I was spending around 500CHF on supermarket food for myself when I was living alone...but I do like some of the nicer foods too so this wasn't your very basic food shop....

You'll find that going out to eat or drink will be a big expenditure...but you can always encourage partys and dinners at home to keep things cheaper (assuming you have tolerant neighbours)

Thanks Monkey, to the point and helpful.

Not much of a TV person so I'd probably skip that but def. will get the internet hooked up - I don't think I will get a phone too, I like to live around my cell phone

Foodwise that sounds fair also - I'm like you, I like the good food and I eat a lot as I go to the gym 4 times a week hah so I expect to be paying a bit for food

Thanks for that info Monk

Re: Living expenses in Switzerland for young guy

What about health insurance? And any taxes to be paid (like council tax in England)?
