Re: PC Games in English?

Most of the guys in the Stadelhofen store speak English quite well. Email I think goes to the Luzern store where I have no experience.

PC Joy used to bring in English games but now it has been bought out I'm not sure if they still do or not. I generally buy everything from Softridge who go out of their way to get hold of what you want, be it American imports, UK imports etc.

They are based in Zurich / Luzern but they will ship by post. Most of the guys in the Stadelhofen store speak English and are very helpful.

Ah thats a wicked site, was looking for a swiss based import game shop, cheers.

Re: PC Games in English?

I'm thinking about buying Rockstar Table Tennis in Basel, did I read correct that some said the German version also comes in English?

Are both the menus and audio in English?

By the way, I've also had a hell of time figuring out what games come in english and which not....without risking wasting money. I'll creat a new post later and post my game list (games bought in Basel) which also play in English.

Also...wog lists the languages for almost all games...really useful. Almost all are accurate. Some for example like PGR3 are listed as German only but I have it and it also plays in English.

The only problem with ordering online from places like play.com, videogamesplus.ca etc is that the parcels are often stopped by customs when they enter Switzerland and you end up paying not just the duty but also the extortionate admin charges of the carrier - around 25 francs for DHL etc and at least 10 francs from the post office.
Try www.cdwow.com

Free Delivery and as long as u keep the price below €50 u won't have any trouble with customs.

Re: PC Games in English?

Just for people's info, there is a website called

www.metaboli.co.uk

which has quite a few games, new and old.

For 12.95 pounds a month you get unlimited access to 142 games.

I am playing Company of Heros now, waiting for the Dawn of War Anthology, and in the next few months they should be getting R6 Vegas, and SS Double Agent.

Yaa.

Re: English Software - Zurich

some PC Joy outlets might have PC games in English. Also - are all games now available for complete download? You might find you can purchase the games online.

There's always play.com too.

Re: Games/Software in English

I most recently bought games from amazon.co.uk marketplace. Brand new, sealed, half the price of the games from stores here and no customs tax. Even if I had paid tax they still would have been cheaper.

I only buy stuff from Amazon UK, prices are good & with a little bit of forward planning, you can arrange to have the stuff delivered when you want. Got fed up paying extortionate rates in Staufacher.

Just took delivery for of Medal of Honour- Vanguard on pre-order ... so will not be lurking on here so much ...

Re: Games/Software in English

I still haven't been able to find a reliable source regarding the language options on a lot of games. For the most part though, the 360 games I've purchased here are all english, save for Oblivion. (My german is good enough, but the translation was atrocious, I ended up trading it to a german friend and buying an English copy from dvd.co.uk instead.)

That being said, when it comes to games I really want to play in the original language and don't want to take a risk, like Mass Effect for instance, I'll order from the UK. Otherwise I'll buy here. (Though Play.com has some great sales that bring the prices well below those here.)

Would it be terrible idea to start a frequently updated list of games purchased here that we can comfirm have an english language option?

EA have always been the problem company with games only containing German and French. If Softidge only have the German version in, they will be able to get the English for you without any hassle.

I pre-order most of my games now and the english versions tend to come in either with the German ones or even ahead of the German ones (in cases where the US version is region free).

I'm not sure what is happening with the 360 publishers at the moment, more and more games are being released without region coding, which is only a good thing as far as im concerned.
EA are the only ones I've had trouble with too. Bought Burnout Paradise on a whim and have to cope with French (which is better than my German at least). No option to change prefered language.

German games can also be censored/altered compared to the original versions, some games are even banned under the german system.

Burnout will most likely have German, French and Italian on the same disk as per most EA games. The language selection is automatic based upon the language settings of the system. If you have your system set to English and play an EA game you will normally get French because in the system language selection French is the first of the three languages to appear after English which is not available on the disk.

If you wanted to play it in German, change your system language to German and then put in Burnout (this is what I end up doing as my French is non existent).

Well at least for me, my French is better than my German at the moment.

Say I switch to German, will the games remember if I switch the system back to English? or do you have to set the machine to another language each time?

Re: Games/Software in English

The game will not remember the language setting if it is based upon the system language it will simply play in the language that is currently set on the system.

It is a real PITA if you end up with a single game like BO that you buy in GFI, you end up swapping the system to German to play, swapping it back to play all your other games in English then swapping it to German again......

Yeah - I gave up on buying EA games for my old Xbox in Switzerland based on the fact that they hardly ever had English soundtracks.

Also though, Microsoft games were often localised too. I was pretty annoyed to find that the copy of HALO that came with my Xbox was French/German only.

Would it kill publishers to put language info on the back of the box like you'd find on a DVD film?

Re: Games/Software in English

I have Burnout Paradise on the PS3 (terrific btw) and it plays in italian, since my PS3 is set to italian. I think the game has no english, but only swiss languages.

On the PS3 it's the same story, you cannot change the language of the games but you have to set the system language.

I'd also advice to try the games out in the shop, setting the language of the console. On the PS2 I had a few games that should have been in german only, but they played in italian or english.
