Okay, what is with people in this country and staring? When I was a single girl here I didn't mind so much and of course being young, naive and careless I assumed it was because I was hot... haha. Now that I am a Mother and of course suspicious of everyone, I find myself wondering what it is about me that everyone seems to find so fascinating? Whenever I am on the tram, someone stares at me.

Re: Quit staring at me!

Ummm. What was it that someone said on another post?

Ah yes - this thread needs more pictures.

Seriously - hard to say. I've not noticed it (but them I'm a bloke). The question that immediately springs to mind is what do you look like?

Re folks staring at you because of children - is this your first? After a while you'll get used to it (staring as you are "abusing" your child that is ) and it won't bother you (as) much.

Re: The sport of staring.....

loool The article says following:

"People become transfixed due to the work of the amygdala, a primitive part of the brain evolved to sort faces into “safe” or “potentially unsafe” categories. When the amygdala cannot process a face that doesn’t fit any it has previously encountered, it simply freezes like a computer unable to process a command. Scientists say that regaining composure requires serious conscious effort."

What does that say about the staring Swiss?

It has been brought up here in the past how the Swiss do tend to stare a bit more than what most Anglo types are used to.

I bumped into an article today, a handy guide on how to stop staring.

Next time someone stares at you, regardless of where you are, you can have a copy of this article with you and hand it to them as you leave their staring space.

Well, just a thought at least.

Re: The sport of staring.....

yep, the Swiss do deserve the Gold Medal here..

I wonder if you would happen to be in their shoes staring at you, would you continue to stare (at yourself) ?
Most probably, Yes !

So, if you would behave in the same way as they do, why hold it against them ?

But seriously, most of those doing the staring more than likely have good reason.
It could be that they are trying to verify your identity.

They could be confusing you with a friend they havn´t seen in ages ?
They could be ever so curious about your ethnic background ?
They could have absolutely nothing else of any interest in their field of vision, except perhaps You ?
Perhaps you have a certain endearing quality that attracts such stares ?

Thats just for starters..

Hey, I wonder if attention seekers actually enjoy being stared at.

OR they could simply be people-watching.

Staring is considered as rude here as it is anywhere else - the line between people-watching and staring is drawn in a different place, that's all.

Re: The sport of staring.....

I know someone said that about 10 pages and one year ago, but I stare back - helps because that usually causes THEM embarrasment and very soon they look away. Swiss kids do not get taught that it is rude to stare so I especially enjoy doing it with kids in the faint hope they will remember the vicious looking woman who stared at them who was probably a witch and they will never do it again or she might come and get them

I feel it's only staring when the other person is aware you're looking at him/her and looks back. Otherwise, it's just people-watching. But then again I'm Swiss..

Re: The sport of staring.....

It´s quite unnerving when you come to the realization that you are under close scrutiny and someone has locked onto you..

It can feel like you have been targetted (for termination ?) like Sarah Connor in the Terminator movie.

If this happens in the confines of your bedroom, it could be a prelude for things to come..

If this happens in a public setting, try to focus intensely on something else with even more intensity. The starer will soon wonder about the bewildering look on your face and be curious as to what the hell you are staring at.. thereby unlocking their stare.. it works.

Play the game.

If you´re travelling on public transport and have a newspaper or magazine handy, make a tear in the paper, hold it up and stare back at them through the tear.. that should freak them out ..

I should include a health and safety warning.
Please dont try this on the elderly.
They could simply be staring because they have poor vision or even be blind..

I can't say what I said in Swiss German in English, just doesn't sound the same.

... noh glotzä gäll !! isch doch luschtig oder?!!
... a looooooooooooooong, comtemplating, thoughtful look that is. what else.

The Italians are good at staring too, and it isn't people watching, no way. It is much more than that. You have to be a woman who has been done that to by Italians to know what I mean. Any Italians around here?

awesome, will try that sometime

i think it's unfair to say only the swiss stare. I've experienced it more in asia than in europe. maybe as it is more crowded in asia...or i take the subway alot there.
my technique is just to stare back until they back down. stare like this
and if all else fails - fart.

Just wink at them, saves having to fart

Although, my 5 year old has a very good fart cushion.. he can also make it squeal like a pig
