Eid ul-Fitr or Id-ul-Fitr,abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

night of the moon (Chand Raat) a night before eid. People often visit bazaars and shopping malls, with their families and children, for last minute Eid shopping. Women, especially young girls, often paint each others' hands with traditional "henna" and wear colourful bangles

sivayyan is a famous dish served on the day

zakaat (tax) is distributed to the needy people by wealthy people, its obligatory !!

Well in Geneva and Zurich there will be Eid Prayers in the Mosques. You can call and ask for the timings. There is quite a sizeable Muslim population in both cities. In other areas like in Basel there will be some of us who will rent a small place for prayers and eating

Are you guys fasting?

I donít want you to tell me in a public forum where you are from but Iím assuming in your country the sun sets earlier than here. What happens in this case, do you fast till sunset even if you have to fast way longer than in another country?

Iíve always been curious about this!

Which country is this? I don't think it is the same in countries like Indonesia. This is interesting : for expats, celebrations will never be the same like home because the cultural aspects are missing, not the religious ones.

Re: Eid festival in Switzerland

But the month of Ramadan is always changing. About 8 years ago it was in winter, so the fasting was shorter then.

No I don't actually want to turn it into anything, as I said, I've always been wondering about that and never got a clear answer.

But I do have another question (as you guessed ) what happened if you are farther north and in summertime, are you guys allowed to shorten it a bit?

I do promise, this is last thing I ask!!

yes we have to practice acordingly and the requirement for fasting is for a healthy indivisual not for very old, sick and childrens, means if some one can afford it, must keep it.

Re: Eid festival in Switzerland

Asak,

i have been here to celebrate eid-ul-fitr last yr , and will be here this year too IA.
Most of the indian and pakistani muslim communities which are in a good no here, organise a hall near helvitiaplatz, zurich for every eid i.e: eid-ul-fitr and eid-ul-adha.

They all gather to read eid namaz if you have family even women can go there, there are seperate rooms . After namaz or if you reach before they usually serve tea and some sweets brought by some considerate muslims.

If you need the exact address and namaz time will confirm and post again.
