Another English question

Hi all
Last question that I`m not sure of,

Why ARE THERE empty drink cans in the classroom this morning?

or

Why IS THERE empty drink cans in the classroom this morning?

ARE because if you were describing the cans, you would say Cans Are, not Cans Is. Cans is plural (more than one) so it is ARE. If it was just one Can, you would say is.

Any easy way to check yourself is to just take off the "why". It then becomes clear that "Is there any drink cans . . ." is incorrect.
