How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

Hi All

I thought I would start this thread because you all know I like running to keep fit, but running alone was not the only way I stopped smoking or lost weight (13kg since last December)

Its Grapes...... now I know you think I must be having a laugh here, but my most successful way to stop craving for a cigarette and for food was to eat grapes especially from the fridge as they tasted like wine.
I don't even know if it is a sientific thing, but they just seem to stop my cravings.

Do you have any secrets that you have used to help stop cravings from smoking or stop eating?

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

When life was something else... I took two weeks off and went to an island in Greece walked 7km to the beach and 7km back every morning with 5 bottles of 2l water filled with sand in my rucksack. A 5ltr bottle also filled with sand in each hand as well as 2.5kg ankle weights (not to be confused with unkle. Thank god never had to carry that!). Did a few more kms later in the early evening. Then hit the clubs where I danced till I dropped. I don't drink alcohol and fizzy drinks so no problem there... Ate fish and veg and no fat and no carb. Came back over 10kgs lighter and fit as funk.

One stone = 14 pounds. You're saying you lost 140 pounds (89 kilos) in two weeks?

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

best things i did to lose a bit of weight and never have to worry again-
cut out sugar- soda, not too much bread or pasta.
- drink lots of water with lemon
- exercise (a lot) doing something i love- and doing it religiously even when i didn't feel like- now i can't imagine not being active and healthy because i feel sooo good.

also, eating dinner early- 5 or 6 then that's it. and having juices everyday for lunch, green juice- spinach, kale, cucumber. yummy!

I can stop smoking whenever I want. I have gone for two months without smoking and never missed it and then found I miss it and go back to my old habit of smoking two cigars a month.

As for losing weight then I have had the first half and then my second half of my colon removed in two operations and after that eating becomes so difficult and dangerous that losing weight is a cinch. I lost four stone easy and try as I might I can't put weight on again without risking my life.

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

I lost 20 kg (and did not gain any back) by doing a proteins based diet. Basically eating only lean meats, fish and some vegetables only. Your body goes into ketosis and burns fat at a very high rate, you then have a pretty long stabilization phase to ensure you don't gain that weight back.

As you point out, this does not add up. If you have your jaws wired and were in a sauna each day then I can't see a person losing more than 6lb a week for two weeks maximum period.

Back to reality, so I assume you mean 10 lbs or KGs. But it doesn't say how you stopped your cravings?

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

Hello

Yes mistake. It was Kgs I meant. And I am sorry the title is OR lose weight. So assumed one or the other.

It is a seriously effective way of losing weight.

And craving. I wasn't a stupid kid so never smoked nor had any attraction to anything like that. Where I come from It's so easy to fall into drugs and... Grew up losing at least 3 cousins to overdoses so that was enough to put me off everything. The cigarettes money went into my mortgage funds thank you!

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

To lose weight, I find riding a bike and playing squash very helpful.
The key is to take part in a sport that you enjoy. Playing squash might be expensive here, so I would suggest biking.

Arguments with the Mrs. also tend to put me off my appetite very effectively.

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

Stopped smoking basically using Allen Carr's advice of stop sticking cigarettes into my mouth, igniting them and inhaling the smoke and by realising that I actually really didn't miss not doing that anymore. Didn't need any substitutes as there wasn't actually anything that needed substituting, I was glad to stop smoking. That was last August, still don't smoke and still don't miss it. Never have any cravings either and that was after having smoked the best part of 20 years
Weight loss by running a bit and eating less - improved the calories in/calories out balance.

Re: How did you stop smoking or lose weight?

Big breakfast does it, as you won't crave much in the evening..Proteins, etc. Couple of fruits and vegies during the day are also good, instead of nasty snacks. Exercise. Think as a thin person, do not eat food BEFORE you actually get hungry worrying you might starve to death later, there is always some food around.. During the day, eat little portions and often, light food. For the cigs, get knocked up..
