Burned DVDs don't play on DVD player

Hi,

I've been having problem with my DVDs.
Well, I've got some movies (.avi) and tried burning them onto DVD-R, but it doesn't play on my DVD player. The weird thing is that when I burnt the movies onto CD-RW, it works fine. I wanted to use DVD-R because it has higher capacity. Btw, I'm using a MacBook.

I've tried to google, but those advises given, doesn't help.

Really lost. Hope to seek help here.

Thanks,
Jo

Does your DVD player play .avis? Normally you would have to convert it to DVD format. The macbook probably just reads the DVD as a data disk.

You could use something like toast to make the .avi files different chapters of the DVD and burn your own compilation.

What type of dvd player do you have?
Maybe try changing the software you use

Good Point cyrus, are you converting it from an avi. before burning it? I use divx to dvd.

I think his dvd player can play avi format as he was able to play the one written in CD.

Re: Burned DVDs don't play on DVD player

there are a couple of dvd formats, sounds like your dvd player isn't compatible with the disc's you burnt to

see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_formats

read the manual, see what formats it supports and buy those type dvd's

Re: Burnt DVDs doesn't play on DVD player

I'm using Phillips DVDR-3355. I assume it plays .avi files since it works fine when I burnt the movies onto the CD-RW.

Should I convert the files from .avi to .divx?

If you can play avi format using CD, then your DVD player can play it.

Probably, you should see the format as bigblue2 told or the dvd was not written properly

Could it be a DVD+R vs. DVD-R issue?

The DVD+R format is divergent from the DVD-R format. Hybrid drives that can handle both, often labeled "DVD±RW", are very popular since there is not a single standard for recordable DVDs. There are a number of significant technical differences between the "dash" (it's not a minus symbol) and the "plus" format, although most users would not notice the difference. One example is the DVD+R style ADIP (ADdress In Pregroove) system of tracking and speed control being less susceptible to interference and error which makes the ADIP system more accurate at higher speeds than the LPP (Land Pre Pit) system used by DVD-R. In addition, DVD+R(W) has a more robust error management system than DVD-R(W), allowing for more accurate burning to media independent of the quality of the media. Additional session linking methods are more accurate with DVD+R(W) versus DVD-R(W), resulting in fewer damaged or unusable discs due to buffer under-run and multi-session disks with fewer PI/PO errors.[4]

Re: Burned DVDs don't play on DVD player

In Philips DVDR 3355 while the DVD+R receives extensive coverage, DVD-R is mentioned only in the specifications section. So before I would go and do something drastic I would simply buy a DVD +R and try recording on that media to see if that works out.

Actually its more of a case of having got the wrong DVD player/Recorder! Beats me how you landed up buying a piece of equipment in the last couple of years that does not support all the available formats.
