Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

Dear all,

Due to changes in circumstances, our initially-planned-May 2010-wedding is going to be in December 2009, i.e. in 6 weeks' time! I am obviously freaking out and trying to get things together (i am not pregnant or anything..we just want to go travelling around Asia for 6 months as of Jan 2010).

We therefore need all the help/tips/links & contacts you have out there! Any input is more than appreciated!

1) Civil Registration
We have called the Zurich Standesamt and it appears that all I (the foreigner) need is a copy of my Birth Certificate - which is on the way. We called them about 5 times to confîrm if i needed anything else, e.g. 'Declaration of Civil Status' and apparently not.

I am now getting more and more cynical from reading the threads on the Forum as it appears that there are minimum 2 documents that one needs here, (1) Certified copy of Birth Cert and (2) Declaration of Status (if not previously married).

Has anyone registered in Zurich before? I've lived here for 5 years and hold a B-Permit and I think that makes the difference...apparently.

2) Church wedding
Anyone experienced a Catholic marrying a non-baptised person? According to the priest we met last night - it is simply not possible to get married (i.e. get papers approved) in a Catholic church in switzerland within 6 weeks.

3) Band vs DJ
I think there's already a few threads on this one but nothing really for Zurich. Anyone knows of a good wedding DJ or small wedding band in the Zurich vicinity?

4) Groom wear/rental
I know this is pretty common in UK but are there any/many decent groom rental places around Zurich?

5) Photographer & make-up
We have not even started looking into this and it's getting scary.... any contacts or friends that are semi-professional wedding photographers would be appreciated!

In the UK and Asia, it's pretty common to have a make-up artist coming to the house and doing the hair, bride's make-up as well as bridemaids. No offense, but most make-ups i've seen so far in Switzerland are not exactly 'professional'. Would anyone know of someone good?

6) Have i missed out anything BIG that we should be getting sorted out up-front?!!

Thanking everyone in advance for your help and input!

I'd be happy to help with make-up and hair but it depends on the date.

Hi!

I am married to a Chinese and we did this in my home (Germany), so maybe other rules apply here. I absolutely needed the declaration of status and the fact that this document type does not exist in China did not make a difference for the German authorities... so we had to fly to China and "make one" artificially: testify that my wife was not married in front of an official, get this testimony officially translated and then do the same thing in Germany again. (and the stuff we were asked to bring changed during the process).

While I hope for you that you do not get those troubles, I would not trust any information from a city hall employee unless you got it in writing. Double check with another person working there, they should have a database and can look up exactly what is necessary depending on the nationality.

I do not want to bring you closer to the edge, but you really do not want to have some stupid bureaucracy issues in the last minute...

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

Ah, we would play at your wedding, for sure, but it's too far and our sitter has left the country .. (we would even try to play something nice! not our usual drony punky grindy stuff, haha)

Good luck, though. It will all pan out!

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

I can at least help you with 1) as I found the following link very useful. Basically, click on the relevant pdf belonging to your country of origin (e.g. the UK is listed under Vereinigtes Königreich):
http://www.gaz.zh.ch/internet/ji/gz/...e/land_TZ.html

There, the various requirements are listed depending on your circumstances.

Good luck!

I guess the OP better looks for M as in Malaysia... and there is says: You just need a birth certificate. Normally you would need to proof that you are not married yet and there are two ways indicated depending of your religion. The underlined text says that the Swiss office in Malaysia has suggested to only ask this document from resdidents of the country. Since you already live here, you seem to not need this one.

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

Hi!

Congratulations!

When I got married to my Swiss husband I needed to have a letter from back home saying that I was not married before. Your birth certificate should also be unabridged: it should state your mum and dads names on it.

Good luck with everything!

His Treverus, thanks very much for this! Yup - we already looked up this bit, and rang twice (if not 3 times) to check with the office to make sure i only need my birth cert.. which i still find quite shocking (great!). Would i still need a confirmation from my Gemeinde - as it doesnt quite state that either... sigh... i hate bureaucracy..

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

Hello,

at the risk of sounding like an old party pooper ( I am one, just don't like to be reminded of it ).
Why not just do the civil marriage before you go, much less to organise, then have the church ceremony after you get back? Or aren't you coming back?

I'm sure there will be a reason for the frantic rush, but I can't imagine what, unless you absolutely have to be married here in Switzerland, prior to your trip, as you aren't coming back and that must play a role somewhere, or the place you are going to doesn't allow unmarried couples into thier country?
Neither of which seem feasible to cause such a stressy wedding to me.

I just think you could save yourselves a whole lot of stress if you do the church thing later. Probably save yourselves a whole lot of money as well, if you give yourselves time.

Ah well, I'm sure you need to do it this way, so will just wish you both a most fortuitous future, hopefully with as little stress as possible.

Congratulations as well.

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

Hi Rampion,

boo...you are sounding like a party pooper indeed! But it's funny...the priest said the same last night! The main reason is because - as you mentioned - we are not sure (and hope) if/when we're coming back to good, old Swissy-land..and it would be nice to have this before we go on our 'adventure'.

For 3) Try this. He's based in Montreux but works mainly in the Zurich area.

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

You need to arrange a venue for the wedding/wedding party quickly, as if you havent got that the rest wont be necessary! Dont forget to send invitations ASAP if you want to have any guests present. 6 weeks before is usual. Hmmm.

Re: Express wedding in Switzerland - help!

so to add to everything - there's a bunch of us who are part of the EF Photoclub run by Karlnmik. If you don't mind about 10 odd budding and a couple of professional photographers around, it may just be a very interesting topic and theme for us, and cool for you too cuz you'd have so many memories through different eyes.

In my experience its best to have all the possible documents you can think of handy, so that there's no drama or tears later.

You want to do an apero or party or dinner after? Maybe find out which restaurants are close to the church you want to marry in so everyone doesn't have to go too far.

Get a polaroid camera with an empty book, some scotch tape and loads of pens so everyone that attends can stick their picture in the book and write something for you guys.

Make sure you have the cushion thing for the rings, your shoes, garter, accessories, little gifts as a thank you for your guests, flowers. Sweet for you to give ur hubby a card too - congratulations for marrying the world's best woman...

Car hire with a driver is quite expensive... why not ask one of your friends to play driver?? My uncle did for me.

Thats all I can think of right now - good luck and don't panic!!

ps. i think a dj is always better - you can always tell him what song n mood exactly you want. My cousin had the loveliest wedding but the band and singer were so awful that it ruined the whole night.

Yes,very true. That's also what I want to find out. Please let know if you find any place(studio) or person(freelacer) served you good. I also need them very soon, but not as so soon as you :-P

Congratulations on your marriage!
