Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

Firstly, not sure if this is in the right place. Apologies if so.

Now for the question. I have a big box of 22-24 Carat gold jewelry that was given to me by my family when I got married. We just seem to cart this box around with us whenever we move and i don't wear any of the items as they are hideous. So was hoping to get the gold melted into a bar and sell on so I could invest the money. Seems like a good time as gold is on the up Except I don't know where to do this. Do you just pop into the jewelers and get it done? Anyone got experience of this?

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

Once we asked same question from a jewlery shop in Bhfstr. ZH and they mentioned us a Jewl. shop that buys them, but don't remember the address.

Anyway some jewlery shops buy it, not the very fancy one I'd say. Maybe those in Longstr. ZH.

Also to mention I think in some other countries they'll pay you more than CH.
They may ask for the papers from when you bought them (might be hard if you got as a gift)

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

Occasionally, there are advertisings in one of the free newspapers, that they buy gold. I think they pay CHF 29/gram

Doc.

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

These folks buy gold in Biel and Olten:
http://www.altgold-verkaufen.ch/category/termine/

In Horgen:
http://www.cash-your-gold.com/kaufen-gold.php

In Zürich:
http://www.beyer-ch.com/juwelen/schm...ld-ankauf.html

I wouldn't recommend melting it. That won't increase the value, and might decrease it. I'd also get appraisals from at least two (preferably three) different buyers before making a transaction.

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

You are right, they will almost certainly ask for documentation, when I used to buy Gold in Dubai you pay a little extra to get the certification that goes with it....... thus making it much easier to sell in London.
There is a kinda large Gold wholesaler there, don't remember the name but they are one of few that would except it I believe.

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

interesting .. how does one 'certify' a piece of metal?

you get a piece of paper that says the accompanying piece of metal is 24 carats?

... and, perhaps more importantly, from where it was purchased.

and of course no one would think of switching that piece of metal with another....??

that's the reason people buy mint issued coins.

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

It's an old thread but worth a shot.

I find it strange that the major Swiss banks don't offer a buyback for their own gold. Can anyone confirm this?

And Raiffeisen advertises both 'buy' and 'sell' prices on the metals page of its website. Have you actually walked in and asked anybody?

No I can't. I have sold gold bars at UBS Bahnhofstrasse before and I'm pretty sure you can do so at smaller branches as well.

Would UBS, Credit Suisse, Raiffeisen, etc. require a certificate of authenticity to buy your gold?

The certificate acts as proof of origin and demonstrates the metal was purchased from a reputable dealer.

How do you know the certificate or the gold sold with it are genuine? It's not a hobby, people don't use certificates.....

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

Normally the bars have a number on them don't they?

If they are just little ones, they may fetch a better price if still in their little plastic cases.

Sometimes they weigh the bigger ones to see how much was lost in transit, but usually you just need to go to the counter. Try one of the branches of a Paradeplatz bank, but not at lunch times.

If it is a lot, you may have to call before hand, and you can get a special appointment in one of their sexier rooms not usually reserved for your average EF lurker.

Re: Where can I sell Gold in ZH?

The topic of selling old gold was covered in a Kassensturz programme a few years ago. It was also published in K-Tipp and can be found here Altgold
