Re: Moving To Geneva

Since there's not too much information in your post, I'm going to give you one perspective - we are not moving to Genva, but Basel, but we had the same work/live in Switzerland, work in Switz/live in France issues.

We were lucky enough to be given an exploratory trip but the company to check out the area. We looked at several things - living communities, rental prices, house prices for buying, tax and commuting.

We have decided to live in France, with a hlaf hour commute for my husband to his work. We found out that he only has to pay minimum tax in Switzerland and Switzerland and France work out how much each gets. (He will have a permit as a cross border commuter)

Rental prices, especially for houses (we did the apartment thing for three years, never again if we can help it!) were much cheaper in France, and buying prices - much better value for money (we will be renting first with a view to buy)

There is also a good interest rate (called 'international rate' or something) for people who live in France/work in Switzerland, if they cross an entire canton to get to work. It means only paying interest of about 2%, which is nice.

The most important fact though, for us was the community - I am working from home at the moment, so we wanted a place where I won't feel isolated. We found many of the villages very friendly, very community spirited. People say hello to each other on the street every morning, some village communities also plan events such as music festivals, village picnics, food fairs etc. It is important to do your research and find out what the villages are like. Many have web pages for their region/cityarea.There are also a lot of estate agents online, but some are hard to find, you could try starting with an Open Media search, as they have places from a variety of agents, and often link to their web pages:
http://www.openmedia.fr/annonces,immobilieres,en.html

A lot of the border communities have a lot of people in them that commute to Switzerland, and can be very friendly places. It is worth checking out, as well as getting everyone elses feedback on what its like to live in Geneva.

I know this is all a bit vague, but hope it helps some!

Megan

Re: Moving To Geneva

Megan,

Thanks very much for your help.

I have been with the wife on a recce to Geneva and we still have no idea.

All the swiss we speak to say that Swiss is better and that becuase so many expats have the idea prices are just as much in France as Switzerland--as Wife does not work it is also difficult

Will try the open media
Thanks
