What are these guys in this boat doing?

Last weekend I went to a brocante fair in Bremgarten bei Bern. I stopped to take a picture of the old covered bridge there and spotted these gentlemen on the river.

Is this a slalom-type sport or were they practicing maneuvers or what? I haven't seen these type of boats here in Vaud. Just curious. They looked like they were working awfully hard!

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

Those kind of boats are very common at least in the East of the country. They punt along, looking busy. What they're up to is anyone's guess... but they have a nice place in Zurich for public lunch.

EDIT: sorry, they row, not punt.

'stange' as in the beer ?

It looks like the propulsion method is similar as used by the gondoliers in Venice.

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

Those sorts of boats are always parked by the side of the Limmat in central Zurich. They seem to have their own parking spots where a regular person wouldn't be able to moor. I thought they were official-related.

In German it's called "Stocherkahn" ... (at least that's the Tuebingen version of it).

I googled stocherkahn, so it's basically a German sport that has made its' way here?

They're Swiss Navy assault ships for their marines.

Attachment 16550

They have strong links to the Norwegian Air Force.

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

These are called "Weidling" in Schaffhausen and along the Rhein up to Lake Constance - here is what Wiki has to say about them (rough translation from German):

A Weidling is a scow (flat-bottomed boat), generally 10 meters long and weighing approx. 320 kgs. These days, it is often made of synthetic materials, although older wooden versions and also metal versions exist. ... The Weidling is traditionally steered upstream in deeper waters with one or two Stehrudern (standing oars), and in the more shallow area along the riverbank, with one or two Stacheln (long poles that push against the river bottom). It is also possible to equip the Weidling with an outboard motor.

This type of boat originated with the Celts and is approx. 5000 years old, making it one of the oldest boat types in the world. Even today, it is used widely, particularly in Switzerland on rivers and lakes. It is used for fun and sport, as well as for ferrying (in modified form) by the Swiss army. The sport "Wasserfahren" uses Weidling exclusively.

Similar Boats:
- Zille (Danube)
- Stocherkahn (Tuebingen, Germany)
- Gondola (Venice)
- Punt (England)

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

Sorry, I completely forgot to actually respond to your original question, Ms. Spouse.

As far as I can tell, in the first and second photo, the guys are practicing with their Stacheln, and in the third photo, mid-river, they are using the standing oars.

On the Rhine, the local Sport Vereins tend to give demonstrations on 1 August, or on the weekend of a village/city festival.

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

In what village does that take place? Or is it pretty much in every village along the Rhine? These fellows were quite impressive, I must say. I could tell that, whatever it was they were doing, they were taking it quite seriously.!

Re: What are these guys in this boat doing?

Yep, that's serious business!

I would have recommended a visit to Schaffhausen, which is really nice - but unfortunately, the Stadtfest in Schaffhausen seems to have been cancelled for this year, the next one is planned for 24-25 June 2011.

The ones I remember from my childhood were in Diessenhofen... but although they have heard of the internet there, they don't seem to think it worthwhile to put any real information up on their website. Will try to find out via my aunty and let you know.

I have. They have them on the stretch of the Rhone between the Villeneuve and St.Maurice (ie direction Valais) - at the point between Bex and Massongex to be exact where there's a rowing club.

I go past there often on my bike and it's always surprised me to see the punts moored up there because the Rhone is very fast flowing at that point.
