What to pack? Moving from the US to Zug

Hi All:

I am moving to Zug with my husband and small child. I have never packed for an international move. Right now I am trying to determine what I should ship and what I should just purchase there. Here are the objects in question.

1. Our beds- should I ship or buy new
2. How much kitchen stuff do I pack? I love to cook and bake.
3. As far as electronics, should we buy adapters to bring things like; blow dryer, clocks, lap top, etc?
4. Is it worth shipping our Ikea dining room set and bureaus? Or should we just buy new ones there?
5. Moving with a small child, do parents have suggestions of item I must pack that would help with the transition, besides Buzz Lightyear.

I would greatly appreciate folks advice from their experiences.

Thanks,
Flowergirl

scroll down all the way on this page. you will find similar posts.

Sell all your Ikea and buy new.
also here is a good website for used stuff ( www.anibis.ch) kinda like craigslist.

As far as electronics; remember we use 220 and not 110 V

Re: What to pack? Moving from the US to Zug

a lot depends on your exact situation.....
how long do you plan to stay?
who is paying for your move? if it's an employer, is the limit to what you can ship sufficient for everything?
will you have storage for what you do not bring, or will you be paying for storage or selling items?
do you have your new place selected? will you have room for everything?

I would bring any computer items and anything with a built in voltage converter. as far as small household appliances - I'd buy them here. I'd bring furniture and upgrade as you like once here....but as you've no doubt heard, most things cost a bit more in CH. we brought some Ikea pieces and I'd definitely do it again, if just to avoid having to assemble them ourselves again. (assuming your moving package would cover - which they should.)

I think keeping some continuity with furniture, belongings, and routine is helpful for kids. also any interests or hobbies should be continued if possible...like cooking, baking, running, whatever. especially if you're a trailing spouse or stay at home parent.
best of luck - and communicate with your relocation company if you have one - they gave me some good ideas on items (dry goods, etc) to stock up on and bring along.

If you love to cook and bake, bring baking pans, utensils, etc, etc, but remember that you're likely to have a smaller oven.
