| | Recycling - Merged Threads - cardboard, plastic, tins, paper etc?
I live in Basel and I've been in my new apartment for almost 2 months. As far as recycling, I know what to do with cans and bottles- but how about cardboard and paper? I've been so busy with work that I've just been letting it pile up in a corner, now its taking over the kitchen and I want it out!
Thanks!

Where in Basel, it makes a difference.
Did you not receive an Abfallkalender from the Gemeinde?

Each area has its own pick up day. For paper and cardboard it is usually once a month.
You can see the schedule by zones here: http://www.stadtreinigung-bs.ch/page.php?lang=0&sel=12
Usually people put stuff out the night before (pick up is often early), so you can get a reminder when going home from the piles of paper all around.

Ah! Thank you!
I did get an Abfallkalenderbut didn't know what it was and I feel bad having my officemate translate ALL my mail so I threw it in the pile of paper.
Luckily, every paper I've ever received since I've been in Basel is still somewhere in my kitchen.

Rule is that you can't just leave it piled outside however. You need to bind it up with string into neat piles. I've been here 6 months now so am starting to live dangerously - stuffing a Migros paper bag with my shredded paper and then putting a nicely binded pile on top to cover. So far so very good |

| | Paper recycling??
Hi, Im relatively new to Zurich (december) and I am trying to get my head around recycling (amongst other things!) I have found the places for plastic/glass/textiles but I cant seem to find anywhere for paper?
I realise that cantons collect at certain times but I have a family of five and just cant store it all! Is there somewhere I am missing?? or do I have to wait till collection time?

You need to neatly stack them and tie them with a string and leave that on the pavement before 7 am on the collection day. You should have been sent a calendar or maybe there is one on the announcements board at the entrance to the building?
I think I've read somewhere that there are also "Altpapier" containers somewhere.
I haven't done any of the above two yet as I don't have a lot of paper to recycle yet.

And a word of warning, you do have to tie your bundles with string...otherwise they won't pick them up.... |

| | Recycling - plastic, tins, paper etc?
Ok, I have figured out that there is a pickup of green waste, household waste and paper from outside the apartment. I have visited the local bottle bank and see you can deposit plastic bottles there also.
My question is, paper products, plastic and tin cans. They all went into the 'green bin' back in the old country. What happens here?
I have a small paper/plastic mountain in my basement waiting to be recycled. Do I bag up for pick up? Sort into paper, cardboard, tin, plastic.....
Your sage advice would be most welcome.

Every village (Gemeinde or Commune) here has it's own collection / recycling policy. Nearby is almost certainly a center where you can bring all your waste. They might collect it on certain days of the year, you need to contact your local office for waste disposal.

Thanks Itigen. I did check out the local village and see where you can deposit bottles, both plastic and glass. They also collect 'paper' from the door monthly - but I am unsure what way it should be presented - i.e. do I bundle, is it all paper? Is there a swiss 'norm'?

There sure is a Swiss way!
There are many threads covering recycling procedures for almost all items which can / ought to be recycled. Have a look here for hours of green reading |

| | Recycling
Hello,
We just moved here and while packing I had used lots of newspaper. Now, my question is how do I recycle that crumpled and torn paper? It seems we have to bundle the papers and tie it. There is no way I can do that and its lots of paper.
Can it go in blue bag? OR what can I do?
Oh joys of Switzerland !
Thanks,
InSwiss

Depends on your Gemeinde. We have large bins in which we can just dump any paper, cardboard etc. Some places you have to tie it up in neat bundles, otherwise they will ignore it. Check locally; if you have to tie it up, but it's not parctical, take it to your nearest recycling depot, they will probably have somewhere you can leave it.

Hi All,
I wanted to recycle an old thread (geddit? - I'll get my coat...) rather than start a new one...
I have some furniture which I need to get rid of, various things. Some stuff I can shift by offering it for free on here, but some other stuff is damaged or worn out, or not worth somebody's effort to collect - even when free.
So, is there anywhere in Zurich where you can either take old furniture to dispose of, or alternatively any charity service who would collect furniture and give it to someone who needs it? Or - can you recycle wood and chipboard etc? And if so, where? I can't find anything on the Stadt Zurich abfall website about wood?

Does anyone know the reason why you can no longer put your paper recycling in paper bags anymore in Luzern (city center)? For the past two years, we have been leaving our paper recycling in a paper bag on our street on the designated day of collection, but this month the collectors refused to pick it up and left us a note saying we hadn't recycled properly. It annoys me because a paper bag is nice and neat, easy to pick up, and paper bags have to be recycled through the paper recycling process anyway. Why waste the twine binding up a bundle. It makes no sense to me, but maybe there is a valid explanation.
