Moving from California to Switzerland - shippers instead of movers?

I have posted in EF before but neglected so far to introduce myself

We are a family of 4 and are about to move from San Francisco to Luzern (where I am originally from). The forum has been very helpful in many aspects.

I have some quotes from actual shippers that can transport a container with our car and furniture etc. to Luzern for us. This seems to be quite cheaper than using a full service mover, got quotes as well (we are talking several thousand dollars). BUT I am sure that with a shipper I will have to take care of quite a few things myself. Has anyone gone this route and what was the experience and what do I need to look out for? Does anyone know what the insurance situation is like when using a shipper?

Thanks for the input.

Re: Moving from California to Switzerland - shippers instead of movers?

We recently used www.upack.com for our daughter's move within the States, and she (and friends) had to do it all, except drive the truck. It was a great service.

Once I shipped from USA to Spain via a container. The items (huge boxes) were delivered to our door, but no more. It worked out fine, but if you have steps in Switzerland, it could be a problem. Plus, SELDOM will you find a neighbor (in Switzerland) to lend a hand, so if you do not have a strong back....you may need to have some movers. Naturally, movers must be paid, and often served breakfast...(okay I am a too nice..) Also, the carton, from the boxes must be disposed of properly. If you have a large American car, it is no problem, but if not, you will need to either save it for "carton day" (occurs periodically) or drive it to a re-cycling center.

The other question is shipping port. Where will your shipment arrive? Will you need to handle the papers? We do air shipments, from time to time, and there seems to be middle men involved...

Not sure I gave you a clear answer, but I can sympathize with your search to save money. Moving is expensive....Good luck!

Re: Moving from California to Switzerland - shippers instead of movers?

Thanks. I am not too concerned about taking the stuff out of the container and moving it to the apartment, can be done w/o stairs. I might be able to get some friends to help me as well, I used to live in CH and this is our move back after 15 years in California. I am currently arranging for the container to be picked up in Antwerp and trucked to Switzerland. That's rather expensive but I am not sure yet if there is another way - via ship to Basel and then trucking - and if that would be cheaper at all.

Will the container fit in your neighborhood. We had a problem ar both ends where the container had to be loaded and unloaded elsewhere. Three years ago it cost about $15k to pack everything, and move and unpack big pieces for a 40 foot container . Our stuff came in via Bremerhaven and was trucked down.

You might check out the US forum, movingscam.com. They had lots of useful suggestions for international moves.

Hi there,

I am just about to do a similar move (from California to Lausanne).
I would appreciate if you could let me know how you proceeded and if you have any company to recommend.

I just posted a similar thread to yours (although we are not moving cars/furniture). Please let me know what you find out about companies. We are torn between shippers and paying for extra luggage (and dealing with the hassle of lots of things to transport ourselves).

We are also paying for this out of pocket...

Good luck with things!!!

We just moved from SF to Luzern! We decided to use Aris out of Oakland. So far so good but we don't have our belongings yet. Right now we are in temporary accommodations and will have our stuff shipped soon so it is here when we move into our permanent place. If you have any questions about our experience so far send me a PM. Good luck with your move!

How did you do with your move? We have 40" container deliver in a few days, and we are shipping it to Zurich next monday. I got $5,000 price plus about $1,000 for insurance, Door to door...now sure is it's too much..or not....
Is there anything you wish you brought from States?
What about TV? did you bring it?
