Hi Override,

Try Amazon.com or Amazon.uk. They are usually competitive in price and also deliver to Switzerland in most cases. Bad comes to worst you can always order off Amazon.de or Amazon.fr. Those will definitely get here.

Re: Buying Electronics from the UK or US

You should be careful of customs duties when ordering packages from abroad, especially if the value is not written on the package. There there is also a processing fee for any packages stopped. This could make the whole purchase not worth while.
(I am only comfortable ordering books from amazon.de which are delviered in such a way that there is no duty to pay under a certain value). I would also like to know how to order electronics from the UK or Germany. Currently I have it sent to an address in the EU (no customs) and collect it on trips abroad.

Re: Buying Electronics from the UK or US

The major issue about buying electronics from the US is the voltage issue. North America runs on 110 volts whereas UK is (for this argument) the same as the rest of Europe/most of the world (you just have to change the plug/have an adaptor).

Funny?
for me amazon.de usually refuse to ship electronics to Switzerland? How do you achieve that definite delivery?

In my experience, if the value is not written, they will send you a letter asking you to send them a copy of the invoice so they can see the value. It does not cost you more than the usual processing fee. It will take a few days longer though.

If you do this, you pay at least 17.5% VAT instead of the Swiss 7.6%.
Of course, there is still the processing fee to get it through Swiss customs (usually around Fr.18), but for items costing more than Fr.200, this is not worthwhile.

Re: Buying Electronics from the UK or US

And, TBH, electronics don't normally appear to be more expensive here than the U.K. or the U.S.

If there's something not available here then you probably don't need it anyway.

What is an electronic swing anyway?

Re: Buying Electronics from the UK or US

My apologies but I should elaborate more.

Usually you direct ship goods yourself in CH if the value is less than 100 CHF (in which make sure that you have the invoice ready in case they ask) and it usually the value of the item is listed on the package. In case of Baby stuff like the swing or the monitor we did this and it worked out much cheaper because this type of stuff is quite expensive in CH. But you have to be smart about it and order in different shipments if you are ordering a lot of stuff to keep it under 100 CHF. of course with some time interval in between.

If you are looking for main stream electronic goods such as TV's, DVD Player, Home theater systems, lap tops etc... there is not much difference between here and in the rest of the EU, UK or US but if you were looking for an SLR camera for instance you will get fantastic bargains in the US. It depends on a case to case basis.

In cases you have an unbeatable deal on something then we just ship it to a friend in FR or DE and pick it up when we have the chance (an advantage of living in CH).

Not all of the Amazon sites (.com, .de, .fr or .uk) will deliver everything that is available on sale on their websites. It differs from item to item because on Amazon there are goods directly sold by them or through Marketplace sellers. Each seller has their set of rules of where they ship so you have to check when you are ordering. Either they will say international shipping available or when you are on the place order page and you insert your address it will not allow you to go further because the system will not accept the address.

Hope the information helps.

Stig

Re: Buying Electronics from the UK or US

I was told that if it's marked gift, then you won't have to pay anything.
It could be grandma sending you something for the baby, so they won't charge you for it.
Not sure if the value (above CHF 100) would change the rule.

At the moment because of the strong Swiss franc. When I bought my digital SLR, it was cheaper here than in the U.S.

you can find the regulations on Swiss post website.

Generally up to 66 fr is tax free, in case of books 209 and in case of presents 100. If the item is more expensive, you will have to pay the taxes even if it was a present.
