mini- surveillance systems ?

ok.. here goes... this is going to sound very weird but to those of you that have read a few of my posts you'll know the truth ( that it IS very weird )

mrs. G and I would like to set up a mini-surveillance system in our garden ... you know the type .. to keep an eye on would be burglars, thieves, chavs, etc.

our reason?.. we believe our resident hedgehog family are having illegal late night raves in our garden and we would like to catch them in the act.

so really... any advice for a cheap sort of CCTV system? ( yes I really am serious.. to a certain point )

thanks,

use X10 Devices. They are cheap and sorta easy to set up (did this a whiiile back) but if the hedgehog is this guy , then you might be in trouble...

He's been out of work for a while so he might be desperate...

Wildlife documentary......

lol

more seriously, webcam's software can record only when something move. I took a load of small film from my bluetits house like that.

The only problem is the lighting source.....

Re: mini- surveillance systems ?

Look for 'flycam2' on the internet. Its a creditcard sized webcam which can also be used stand-alone as a videocam (records to SD card). It has one of those infrared sensor which makes it motion-activated (it starts recording when it senses movement and stops when movement stops) so you only record the juicy bits. Don't know whether hedgehog porn is steamy enough to start it recording though...

Also perfect as nannycam or to record the neighbourhood kids slashing your tires

hmm.... we've left the patio light on a few nights and they don't seem to mind that too much ( mrs. has been feeding our one hedge, but we think there is now a litter of pups )

how about recording?.. will the webcam store to hard drive? ( sorry I really know nothing about the things )

You actually could install a kind of *movement detector* than would turn on some light.

yep, everything ends on the hard-drive.

I even found once a webcam software to record shooting stars (which actually was used by some people to record ufos activities...)

I can imaging you can use it for everything you want, planes, thunders ....

Just wait. Anything out of the ordinary happening in your garden will soon be photographed and sent to you by your neighbours .

Re: mini- surveillance systems ?

Read an interesting article in the FT last week comparing a few different systems that might interest you - Price wasn't too unreasonable - A Logitech Alert Video Security System is compared with a Lorex LW2702 Digital Wireless LCD Surveillance System, a Defender SN300-4CH-001 and an Avaak Vue Personal Video Network. Link below - If it wont let you access then PM me and i will copy paste you the article....

Good luck with those damn technohedgehogs - think i met a few of them at Street Parade last week.

Re: mini- surveillance systems ?

Just slightly off topic from my original post... I saw this written up in "20minutes" this morning and I'm thinking it's a must have for every household in Switzerland.. our own mini stealth surveillance plane.

I really want one.... shame they don't quote a price on^line

http://www.sensefly.com/products/swinglet-cam/

You don’t need to be a pilot to fly the swinglet CAM, it takes off, flies and lands by itself.
With help of the software ”e-mo-tion” you can define a whole flight path for the swinglet CAM and direct it where to take the pictures. Once the swinglet CAM has landed you can download those pictures from the photo camera. If you have basic computer skills, then you will be easily able to operate the flight programming software "e-mo-tion". With simple drag & drop functions it is possible to pre-program, and update during flight, the position, altitude and behaviour of the swinglet.

just think of the possibilities... finding out what those Russian girls next door have really been up to pool side.
