Buying Spirits online...

Hi fellow EF’ers.

I want to order a bottle of Nicaraguan Flor de Cana (The best Rum I have ever had by the way) online through a German based Wine dealer.
Question is, will I still get charged duties etc. even though it is just the one bottle (less than 1 liter)? I’m not too fussed about paying for Swiss VAT but don’t want to end up paying 25 Francs in Admin Charges by Swiss Post. That would kind of defeat the whole purpose of trying to get this expensive spirit abroad…

Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Buying Spirits online...

Under normal circumstances, if the value of the parcel + shipping is greater than about 65 CHF then you will be charged MwSt + 18 CHF admin charges.

With spirits there may be additional duty. I don't know how allowances work with mailed spirits and how duty is charged.

It might be less hassle getting it in Switzerland. Paul Ulrich stocks Flor de Cana.

Sure you will, duty free is only applicable to what you transport personnaly, othersise it would be a bit too easy.....order a bottle every day !

Re: Buying Spirits online...

Would be interested to know how cheap you think you can get it. I pay 55sfr at coop for this wonderful nectar. I forget if it's the 12 or 18 year old (probably 12)...edit again....hmm... 12 year old it is, and 22EUR = 29 CHF currently, a good saving...

Wow. That's some mark-up by Ulrich then (it's 69 CHF on their site).

Do you know if there is more than one Coop near Letzipark?
A friend of mine tried to find Flor de Cana there but didn’t have any luck…

Not near, but the Coop IN Letzipark had it when I was there. There is a small one closer to Lindenplatz, maybe your friend went there?

Re: Buying Spirits online...

This is great news. Flor de Cana is my favorite rum in the world. I just finished the bottle that I brought back from Barcelona so I'll have to check the Coop in Letzipark to see if they still carry it.

Also, FYI - I just saw that the they carry the 12 year Flor de Cana at Bàcaro in the airport for 69 CHF.

Re: Buying Spirits online...

They have not stocked it there (Letzipark) recently - I checked a number of times this year and there is no longer any stock, nor a gap in the shelf for re-orders. However, if you visit the wine/spirits section of Jelmoli in Zurich, you can get a bottle for I think 65 sfr - the rum is near the whisky area towards the stock room. They also have a good choice of other rums there - better than Globus, and if you time it right you may well be offered a chance to do some tasting

Re: Buying Spirits online...

Any other or better (also cheaper) alternatives to http://www.ullrich.ch/ & http://www.spiritsandmore.ch/?

I would gladly buy online or go into a specific store in the center of town to get a nice bottle.

Seems ullrich is a far to expensive option but spiritsandmore doesn't have the largest selection. Perhaps specialty shops are a better bet? anyone know any?
