Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

When we lived in Stockholm we thought Sweden was the most expensive country in the world, then we moved to Paris and thought France was even more expensive, now in Switzerland I've stopped doing currency conversion to preserve my sanity. I can't believe what rents and commodities cost here!

Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

Cost of living definitely higher than USA so a student might do better there, however the experience here in terms of places to see, things to do and access to other European countries is in my mind priceless. Plenty other expensive euro cities including Dublin !

Maybe by price . . . the kebabs in Zürich are the worst I've ever had though.
Worse than an England doner kebab, or did you somehow miraculously manage to avoid ever eating one? English kebabs are beyond filth, they make Swiss ones look like Haute Cuisine.

Best kebab I ever had was in Berlin, I could eat two in a row without any difficulty.

Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

I think there is no point comparing as each country has their own pros and cons.

Switzerland might be expensive place to live, but you are being compensated anyway as the wage is high.

At the end of the day its how you make it. Its all down to you and your budgeting skills.

But believe me, you can save money if you are Living and Working in Switzerland for as long as you are living within your means.

Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

Don't buy kebabs when totally pissed. You end up walking in the first place which smells of hot fat and also they know you're going to drop half of it and vomit up the other half, so don't exactly make you the best kebab.

If you're in London, either go to the Efes (Gt Titchfield St) or one of the places around Edgeware Road.

Sweden is compared to Denmark and Norway not expensive to live in eventhough the Big Mac index for Sweden might be high.

Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

Just my .02
I'm from the US and have lived here in Switzerland for about 18 months. I also travel internationally frequently and have been all over the world. The Swiss seem to have their own little economy here, and wages vs. buying power are about the same as in the US. For example, dinner at a decent restaurant where I live costs about 40-50 CHF. In the US, for the same quality of restaurant, I would pay 30-40 USD. However, when you factor in that I make 25% more here for doing the same job, it's actually cheaper to live here. That, plus when you finish being a "learling" (sp?) here you are hired with a salary of between 3000 and 3500 CHF per month as a starting salary, it's MUCH better than what I made as an 18 - 20 year old in the US.

Re: Is Switzerland most expensive country in the world!

I lived in London prior to Switzerland, and when i was looking to move and everyone said Switzerland was 30% more expensive i didn't believe them - I lived in London, and what you pay for things there is extortionate. Now I believe them, Switzerland is pretty special. And even after a decent pay hike moving across, I still think monthly living is more expensive (except rent - that is cheaper here)

My additional 2 cents, the US is a very big place and COL varies substantially. Though, I agree the starting wages for a youngster fresg on the job market tend to be much higher in Switzerland.

According to this website:

Japan, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Norway, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Denmark, Argentina, China.
Argentina, one of the ten most expensive countries in the world? You have got to be kidding.

I was pondering that as well... However, it depends on how it's been ranked. I saw nothing on the site listing how they came up with their list.

If you are looking at local salaries and what you can buy with them, I can tell you we got more for our CHFs in Switzerland than we do for our ARP in Argentina.

If you are coming to Argentina with CHF/USD/EUR (or what's the symbol for the real?) then it's not so expensive. If you live here on a local salary..... that's another story.

So, I'm thinking now that I'd actually put Argentina above Switzerland.

If you look at the Big Mac index, Switzerland is near the top in purchasing-power parity. In this sense, CH is less "expensive to live in" than almost any other country in the world (with the exception of Norway). But Argentina is not even near the bottom; it is at the same level as Australia, the US, Japan and Britain.

If you look at plain price levels (from the UBS study), which is not very useful until you also include wage levels, Switzerland is at the very top of "most expensive" (about 110 in the scale, with NY = 100), and Argentina is near the bottom (about 50).

I completely agree with the part I bolded above. Although, personally, I have my doubts about the Big Mac Index. As in many countries, Argentina included, McDonalds is up on the "luxury" scale were as in the US it's in the "cheap as chips" scale. But I'm no economist. LOL.

I'd be interested in how that survey listing Argentina as one of the most expensive came up with it's numbers.

How much does the UBS survey take into account differences of salary & currency? I don't think it does.

lol ok fellas.

Personally ive never had a worse kebab than in england
I can believe that, but I'm interested in finding one or two good kebab places in towns where I live and drink. London filled that requirement admirably, Zürich has yet to do so.

That's exactly its point. It's a prices and earnings survey with various different measures and it has a lot to say about currency (most of the tables are currency weighted). Have a read.

It's a crap website that doesn't provide context or methodology for its top ten, so why spend any more time speculating over it?
