Miele fridge broken. Swiss customer service?

Our fridge has just broken down - it's not cooling any more (the compressor does not appear to be running).

It's two months out of the two year warranty.

Has anyone got any experience of Miele customer service in Switzerland and getting things repaired out of warranty?

I expect a fridge to last more than two years and generally ignore warranties if the time period is unreasonable.

(Our heated towel rail with a two year guarantee needed to be repaired twice within that time and after the secod time, I asked for the warranty period to be reset to two whole years otherwise they could take their piece of junk with them and give us a full refund - we got the warranty reset.

It may just be a sensor that's faulty but the sensor fault code isn't appearing, nor is any othr fault code.

Anyway, if anyone has any tips or experience that may help before I call them tomorrow morning, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's quite surprising for a Miele. Maybe an informal call to their service line will work. They have a good reputation and will want to keep you happy. It might just be something simple like a faulty thermostat not sending the on/off control to the compressor.

I'm hoping it's just a faulty thermostat but a fault code should flash up for that.

I'm one of those people that doesn't like to call anyone out to fix anything unless I know exactly what's wrong first.

I've got it switched off at the moment for a couple of hours in case the compressor thermal-trip is in operation for some reason.

Miele are fine, i've never had problems and i got 10 Miele machines!

Just for your information it wasn't your bitching and moaning that got the warranty extended, it's the law. If something breaks during the warranty period, any pieces that are changed benefit for an identical period of warranty from the date when they were installed.

I knew that.

The warranty was extended for the whole item and not just the bit that was broken.

Could this law be extended to North America

Miele have an excellent after sales service here. We've used them a couple of times to fix our washing machine.

I've got it switched off at the moment for a couple of hours in case the compressor thermal-trip is in operation for some reason.
In case people experience the same:

It's now working again. Turning it off for a couple of hours did the trick.

My theory -the door was left very slightly ajar during the night (my youngest had a fever and needed settling a couple of times in the night with a bottle of milk).

The compressor working full time because of this coupled with the fact that the fridge is in built into a set of cupboards with limited ventilation may have caused the thermal-trip to go.
Perhaps the coils need cleaning as well as they may be dusty but I'm not sure how dusty they'll get in an in-built unit.

Anyway, it seems okay now so I won't bother getting in touch with Miele this time.

So does ours but there is a bit of a transitional state where the door may be very slightly ajar but the micro-switch in the door that triggers the alarm has not yet been activated.
We have noticed this before if something like a wine bottle has been laid flat in the wrong place in the fridge and is pressing against one of the door containers when the door is shut

This can also happen if the fridge is not installed properly and is wonky (technical term). The seal round the door may then not be sealed all the way round.

The way to check for this is to put a switched-on torch in the fridge, close the door and turn off the room lights. Any light escaping indicates an ineffective seal and a fridge that's wasting energy trying to stay cool.

If anyone's interested, it went wrong a couple more times so we called out Miele.

It was one of the thermostats around the back which was faulty, causing hidden air-vent panel to ice up thus restricting cold air-flow to parts of the fridge.

As the fridge was only two months out of warranty, he only charged us for the dismantling, cleaning round the back (it was built-in) and his travel time.

He didn't charge us for the spare parts or the time taken to make the repair so we only need to pay half what we could have had to pay if they had wanted.

Can't really say fairer than that.

Re: Miele fridge broken. Swiss customer service?

I have a Miele Fridge with separate fridge (cooler) and freezer sections. The fridge started to produce a lot of water which collected under the salad tray just two years after buying the fridge and out of warrenty.

A Miele service man came, looked at the water and told me that the fridge is collecting water under the salad tray, went away and I received a bill. The fridge still produces the water. I don`t know why and of course I had to pay the bill.

Thanks
