ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

Hey guys, I'm planning on applying for a Masters degree in Computer Science with an emphasis on Visual Computing at the ETH Zurich.

Does anyone here have experience with the application process? Any tips? Accepted/rejected profiles?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

You should post this in daily life or similar - this forum is for permit and govt. related questions.

Hey, thanks, must have overlooked the other/general section. The other one had a couple of uni-related threads, so..

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

I have had experience with applying to the ETHZ, I also have 2 friends who are doing their masters there at the moment.. I am not sure what kind of information you are looking for but let me try.

Admission itself is quite competitive, but it's not the issue. Getting accepted with a scholarship is the real challenge. The application process IMO is more similar to the US than to other European unis. The application deadline AFAIR is around mid December. The application requires nothing special, except perhaps general GRE (which I find kind of weird). Anyhow, I can tell you out of experience that they don't care the least bit about your verbal scores.

You get your response before mid March (official statement), hopefully a YES. I got mine mid February. You get the response for the scholarship shortly afterwards.

The tricky application is the scholarship application. You have to provide a DETAILED proposal of your thesis topic. You have to find a reasonable problem and somehow magically predict your progress schedule 2 years beforehand!! Yet, I have seen some people get accepted and indeed follow their schedule. I haven't seen many of these though.

My final warning is to start preparing your application soon as the deadline is close. You also need a lot of time for the proposal thing for the scholarship.. There used to be Spring admission but now there is only Fall. If you miss this deadline, you'll have to wait an entire year.

Hope this helps!

If you need more information, let me know. I even have a friend who is just completing her masters in visual computing.. So I can get you some insider information .

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

Hey, thanks a lot for the advice! =) You've been really helpful so far, fa shokran awy!

I am actually hoping to get accepted with a scholarship. I've already taken the GRE and TOEFL during the last couple of weeks, and I guess they went pretty well overall. By them not caring, do you mean that bad verbal scores are irrelevant, or that good scores are irrelevant?

How detailed is the thesis proposal supposed to be? Is it even binding or is it simply intended as a test of sorts?

Anything else you know that might affect the outcome positively or negatively?

Yeah, I have until the 15th of December to apply. Until recently I thought the upcoming application period was for Spring admission. To my unpleasant surprise, it turned out they need much longer to decide than other unis in Germany, so I have no choice to but to apply this time.

Any insider information would be highly appreciated. =D Is she happy with the program? Any reservations? Is it easy to get a job as a research assistant or any other student job in the field elsewhere in Zuerich?

Sorry if I've overwhelmed you with questions this time. I have one last one though: Were you also an undergraduate in Egypt? =)

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

For the scholarship application, this page: http://www.rektorat.ethz.ch/students...lence/index_EN says that the application will be available on the 1st of November. I remember the application having a template of exactly what you need to write. I think it is binding.. I have a friend who is planning to try to *bend* the topic a little bit.. He is not sure he will succeed though. But I cannot give a definite answer.

As for the GRE, I meant that as long as the scores aren't very bad (like 100 or something), then they are not taken into consideration (my scores and my friends' scores weren't impressive).

As for my friend, she is happy with the program and the ETH in general.

Regarding the question about the job.. I did not understand you. If you meant after finishing the masters, then probably yes if you do well in your thesis. Your professor most of the time (from what I have seen and heard) decides to keep you if he thinks you are good. If you meant to ask about a job while you study.. You can only get a part-time job. AFAIK, your student visa will not allow you to work more than 15 hours a week. A friend of mine was doing some small programming project as a Hiwi. They paid him well.

Yes, I was an undergraduate student in Egypt at the time :-).

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

HI everyone !

I am planning to apply for Master Degree in Management,Technology and Economics at ETHZ.

Is there anyone who has been admitted without the GRE/GMat scores because i found out recently that GRE/GMAT are of high importance for the admission procedure.

I have a great academic performace with a GPA of 4.9 (5 being the highest) but unfortunately there is no time left for me to enter the GRE or GMAT.

Do you think i can be admitted to the ETHZ?

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

Hello everyone,

I have done bachelors in mechanical engineering from India. My GPA is 3.97 out of 4. My total credit hours for bachelors are around 200. I am awarded a few awards/medals from university and other bodies for good academic performance. 3 medals from university and 1 from other body. I also have 1.5 years of experience of working in a reputed MNC in relevant field. I want to know about my chances of getting admission for masters at ETH zurich and also chances of getting scholarship.

Hi, I'm a Mechatronic Engineer from Mexico, I applied to ETHZ in november, today I got a rejection email. They don't explain why I'm being rejected but I guess they will explain in the letter they'll send afterwards.
Anyway, I kinda knew this will happen, I graduated No.5 in my career and didn't get a great score in the GRE test.
But I'm a really stubborn person and have my eyes set in ETHZ. I want to ask you so many things about how to improve for my next application.
I will really appreciate if you could contact me.

Thak you.

Re: ETH Zurich: Anyone with application experience?

Hello! Well my in my country the scale goes from 0 to 10, I got 9.2 in my barchelor. So I understand it will be a 3.7 in GPA.
I provided recommendations but they aren't known researchers, just my college professors.
My GRE scores were: Verbal 151, Quantitative 148, Analytical writing 3.
My TOEFL is 593.
I haven't done any research but I would like.
Thank you for your help.
