Christmas activities/trips for single people?

Hi everyone:

I will be spending Christmas alone this year and I don't want to be stuck in Zurich bored and by myself!

I have searched and searched online for Christmas activities/trips, but have not found anything within my budget (about 600 CHF).

It would be fun to go hiking, or learn how to ski, or do something cultural. I would love to visit Sicily or Santorini, for example.

Does anyone know of travel agencies or activities aimed at single people over Christmas that I could look up? Thanks a lot for any help.

I don't know of any agencies but you could always book a hostel in a big city, a lot of them do xmass dinners or drinks and it would be a good way to meet people.
Currently i am thinking of going to Tel Aviv and just not doing the whole christmas thing at all. I can enjoy the christmas markets around Switzerland france and Germany and then just take off for the weekend to a warmer (a bit at least) destination.
Or you could do an organized tour company like contiki, intrepid, or topdeck. Good luck finding something fun!

Kiwi, thats basically what i am planning this year. Easy jet needs to add some new destinations though as i have been to most of the ones from Basel. I am thinking of heading to Tel Aviv this year. I know they don't celebrate xmass but thats part of the charm!

What cities have you spen christmas in so far?

You can all go together in Wien, Austria. It's not very expensive and the holiday atmosphere is just amazing.

Re: Christmas activities/trips for single people?

Hi Kylster:

It was a bit of a washout, I'm afraid! I ended up stuck at the airport on the way back from a pre-Christmas work trip because of the bad weather, but I didn't have anything lined up anyway. At least there was company at the airport!

I'm already thinking about options for this year, and I suggest you do too. There are few options and things seem to fill up fast.

In the other comments, you'll see that a couple of people suggested staying at a hostel somewhere, and that might be the best option. Because from last year's search, it seems like anything planned is very expensive, hard-to-find (especially for single people), and not that flexible in terms of dates and locations.

Last year when I was searching for things to do, I did find a couple of interesting hotels where Christmas activities were planned and single people seemed welcome. These were mostly quite expensive. For example, there is a castle in Dublin that I'm thinking about for this year. There's a tour, caroling, stuff like that. Let me know if you might be interested in this kind of thing and I can send specific hotel suggestions. There are also special train trips within Switzerland (search the zvv.ch website for these) to locations like Christmas markets and the Jungfraujoch, with accommodation included. These seem quite expensive though, and they may attract older people. Still, beats being stuck at home, alone! While stuck at the airport, I ran into some people who were about to go cruising on the Danube.

What I really would have liked to find was a ski school or a group hiking trip somewhere, but I had no luck at all with anything like that.

I will definitely update this post if I find anything. And I hope you'll drop me a line if you find anything! Thanks for reminding me that I need to get going on this year's search!
