Processing Times For The Residence Permit

I am a UK citizen who will soon be moving to Switzerland. I have just been told that I have to apply for the permit upon arrival, is anyone able to tell me approximately how long it will take for the permit to be processed?

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

Its supposed to take 2-3 weeks from application according to the immigration office, however reading this forum it looks more like 1-2 months if you have no issues but can take longer. I think it just depends on whether they are busy or not. It took us 8 weeks, but we were not a simple case.

Good luck!

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

In my experience it took just over a month before receiving the permit (and the associated bill for issuing it).

After you have had the very brief interview at the immigration office, they will give you an officially stamped document confirming that you have applied for a permit. You can then use this document to smooth the way when opening a bank account, setting up your telephone connection etc, without having to wait to receive the actual permit.

As a minimum, you will need to take your passport, birth certificate, employment contract and 2 (possibly 3 ??) passport sized photos when you go to register. If you don't have everything they want to see then they will simply ask you to return to the office when you do.

You don't need to register immediately on arrival, but I think it is supposed to be within 7 or possibly 10 days of your arrival. I'm sure you will find the exact time limit elsewhere on this forum (although like many things here it may well vary from Canton to Canton).

Enjoy Switzerland.

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

I got my permit in 2 weeks, and my husband had to wait for more than a month. It depends.

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

Hi there,

Does anyone know if this timing (it seems like it varies on average from 2 weeks to 2 months) also applies when applying for a residence permit after marriage? I'm planning to enter Switzerland on a long stay visa, to get married.

Grateful for any advice!

Thanks,
Christy

It depends on your nationality, canton and situation. If you come on a fiancÚ visa and all the paperwork is done before hand, it should make the process quicker after the wedding.

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

Thank you, that's reassuring. Yes, I'm waiting on my 'marriage visa' to come through in the UK before entering Switzerland. I'll be getting married (and living) in Zurich. So I am hoping all the prep we have done so far means that the residence permit will come through relatively quickly - close to the 2 weeks mark? If anyone has any experience in this area, would love to hear more!

Thanks,
Christy

Re: Processing Times For The Residence Permit

Recent reports suggest that just about every cantonal office is backlogged due to the wfh and lockdown situation. Expect this likely will continue for some time.
