Change Kanton - C permit

Dear all,

I am living in Zurich and having a B permit (non-EU). Now I would like to move to Kanton Aargau.

Can the years in Zurich be counted if I want to apply a C permit?

Thanks in advance

Alyce

Yes they count. When you become eligible for a C permit is determined by your nationality. Canadians and Americans are exempt from the 10 year rule.

Ok PBrogers:
So, changing of Canton doesn't reset the counter to "0", right?
Thanks.

No for permit. But it may for citizenship if you ever want to apply.

Re: Change Kanton - C permit

Just wanted to add that changing the canton does not reset the counter to zero if you are thinking about applying one day for the passport. You do have to get proof of residence for all places you have lived in the country.

Please note however that most "gemeinde" require you to have lived a minimum of 2 years there before you apply for swiss citizenship. So if you are less than two years away from applying for citizenship (most people are required to live here 12 years to apply), then you should not move. Otherwise you risk having to wait at least another 2 years before you can apply for citizenship. My "gemeinde" prefers candidates who have lived there 5 years.

im not sure this is correct. some colleagues of mine who have lived their whole lives in CH and are native born here but to italian parents are still not CHer because theyve moved and it reset.

also, the North american rule exception which is referred to in the link you posted, is that detailed anywhere? id be interestd to know more about that. Ive considered moving kantons but shyed away due to the potential reset. if im on false info i'd love to know.

greets and thanks for the info!

Re: Change Kanton - C permit

I didn't have any issues getting a C. I am a UK citizen. I lived in Basel-Stadt for 4.5 years and then when I registered in Zurich I asked if I could get a C. The only thing I needed was a piece of paper from Basel-Stadt saying how long I'd lived in their canton and an extract from the criminal record register (strafregister) in Bern. By the way, the 4.5 years in Basel was not always on a B permit. I had an L for just over a year when I first arrived.

The most complicated part of all this was sorting out tax. I switched employers in Feb of 2008 (while living in Basel-Stadt). Then in May 2008 I moved to ZH, but it wasn't until Sept/Oct when I received my C permit. I then stopped paying Quellensteuer. The final months of 2008 I had to pay a separate bill. Filling in that tax return for 2008 in April 2009 wasn't easy! I had to call them at least once after receiving a bill that was too high however I think I still ended up paying a bit more that year.

The Canton of Geneva has a 2 year residency requirement for naturalization (which means all communes in the canton cannot surpass that 2 year requirement as it would contradict cantonal law).

In any event, the 12 year Federal requirement should be reduced to 8 years soon under a new law being discussed, and all cantons will have to stick to a maximum 3 year residency requirement.

Hi:
Is there a place/website where I can be updated, or get more information of this 12-to-8 years requirement?...
Thanks a lot.

I haven't really seen any updates since March when a legislative proposal was being circulated and discussed.

Below are the latest updates I could find.
